The next paper for IABSE British Group’s Manchester symposium is titled “Super-Low-Carbon Footbridge Design” written by Ben Curry, Callum Fleming (COWI), Ben Addy and Ezra Groskin (Moxon Architects Ltd.). The paper takes a comparative look at two #steel superstructure #bridges through the lens of #embodiedcarbon. One of which is constructed (Hams Footway) and the other is at detailed design stage (Hampton Footbridge). Both on behalf of Worcestershire County Council. The papers offers interesting insights in to the difference in #environmental product declarations (#EPDs) for #structural steel. In particular, when comparing values in the UK to Europe. This highlights the need for designers to clearly distinguish the factors they are using and the type of #steel they are considering (e.g. plated by rolled), as it can present a significant difference in the overall embodied #carbon. The paper concludes that achieving a higher than A+ rating using the SCROBS rating will likely require a material other than steel. The regions facing rapid growth and development must build fast and be allowed to do so on their terms. Consequently, we need immediate, scalable, and impactful innovations in concrete construction for and by designers in Less Economically Developed Countries (LEDCs) that we can all learn from. In that spirit, I'm excited to share that our peer-reviewed article, "Concrete and Development: Context-driven Formwork Design for Scalable, Accessible and Low-carbon Concrete Structures", has been published in the Climate issue of TECHNOLOGY | ARCHITECTURE + DESIGN. The article presents a generalized framework for evaluating contextual design and fabrication methods before demonstrating its use by evaluating several lab-scale structurally optimized prototypes. We discuss the urgent need for low-carbon urban concrete construction in LEDCs and present a framework for comparing fabrication methods, evaluating them for scalability, sustainability, and economy. The American Wood Council has been exploring a new high-capacity wood structural panel (WSP) wood-frame shear wall design, ideal for meeting stringent seismic loading requirements in multistory buildings. This new design solution, sheathed on one side, expands opportunities for wood in seismic regions and building types with more glass on the exterior. Following initial tests in 2022 that demonstrated a 30% increase over the maximum shear capacity, subsequent testing revealed an impressive near 70% increase over the maximum previous standard capacity, achieved through specialized detailing without the need for additional steel hardware. The first presentation of the afternoon will be on Carbon & Facades: Understanding Operational and Embodied Carbon, presented by John Jackson and Anna Burhoe of Simpson Gumpertz & Heger (SGH) Designing facades to achieve operational performance goals while also remaining constructible and maintainable, all within a client’s budget and schedule, is a challenge in itself—but the challenge does not end there. Our industry continues to expand with a growing focus on reducing embodied carbon and greenhouse gas emissions while increasing the recyclability and reusability of building materials as part of the design and construction process. In this presentation, we will explore the relationships between embodied carbon and operational carbon of common façade and glazing systems. We will highlight the current industry challenges for measuring and reducing embodied carbon for façade systems, as well as opportunities for future innovation.
