During the Coliving Conference, Katia Dimova from Chateau Coliving & Coworking shared an insight that really stuck with me: "You can attract tenants with nice, good-looking spaces, but after a while, they get used to their room. To keep them, you must deliver a great tenant experience." In my conversations with starting or experienced property operators, I see too many focusing mainly on creating attractive spaces. While aesthetics are important, they often ignore the operational process that defines a tenant's experience. Sure, you’ll attract them, but what happens when you lose them after two weeks because service tickets are ignored, invoices are wrong, and communication is poor? 🤔 ➡️ To all future tenants: Don’t judge a book by its cover. 🌍 Just returned from an exhilarating Placemaking Week in Rotterdam! Four days of intense collaboration with urban innovators, including mayors and deputy mayors from across Europe, exploring cutting-edge processes, methodologies, best practices, and funding models for placemaking. On Wednesday, we had the privilege of co-creating part of the program, delivering a session on "Social Sustainability" in partnership with Amber Leijen from the Dutch Social Design Studio Arttenders. Here are some takeaways from Placemaking Europe and our workshop: ✅ Rotterdam's Pioneering Approach: They've developed their own Placemaking Manifesto. ✅ Meaning Matters: Space transforms into place when filled with meaning. ✅ Learning Opportunity: Architects and urban planners should deepen their understanding of living systems. ✅ Engagement Redefined: Moving beyond "cuckoo clock" participation! ✅ Connection is Key: Seeing each other as human beings is essential. ✅ Financial Literacy for Placemakers: Understanding finance is a crucial part of placemaking. ✅ Embrace Incremental Change: No action is too small - every step counts! For us, placemaking means creating places that serve life and create shared value. That's why we focused on the Socialtecture Principle #4 "Ecosystem" in our workshop on Thursday. At the end, a participant perfectly captured what we're passionate about and what adds value to any great place: "At first, I saw a square, but now I see an ecosystem." Thank you, Placemaking Europe.
