In a bid to enhance community development, Ulalo, through its Community Activation, Natural Resources Management, and Improvement of Social Infrastructure (CANARASI) Project, has commenced the construction of two community centers in Kazuni and Thunduwike, located in Mzimba North. Going to Scale 2 : One Project to Change A City 4 minutes of wisdom from Somsook Boonyabancha about how to make one project a jumping off place for citywide change. [Cities4cohousing] Community Land Trust Brussels was on a mission in Thessaloniki. On Tuesday and Wednesday, we met Mayor Stelios Angeloudis and the Municipal team, as part of the URBACT Cities4cohousing project. Together with our colleagues from Bruxelles Logement - Brussel Huisvesting, we were invited to come and talk about our Calico project. There is hardly any social housing in Greece and social housing policy is in its infancy. As elsewhere in Europe, housing prices have risen strongly here too. This is why the pioneering work of the city of Thessaloniki is so important. Through a pilot project in which vacant public buildings will be taken refurbished and managed by a Social Rental Agency, the first 30 social housing units in the city will be produced. Thessaloniki is interested in the way we take real estate out of the market and in the place community building takes in our model. The City of Kigali, capital of Rwanda has said that they expect to build 10,000 affordable houses in the next five years, to assure decent settlement for all the city dwellers now estimated to 1.7 million. What about in the rural areas? What about second cities? The City of Alexandra project, led by the Luthando Maduna Foundation, is a transformative initiative with a vision to revitalize and rebuild Alexandra, one of South Africa's most historic townships. Over the years, Alexandra, known locally as "Alex," has witnessed significant hardships, including economic inequalities, housing shortages, and limited access to quality infrastructure. This legacy project is dedicated to addressing these long-standing issues by creating a modern, sustainable city that will serve as a beacon of opportunity and growth for its residents.Reviving the City of Alexandra is essential, as it will directly address the deep-seated socio-economic inequalities that have affected the community. By improving infrastructure, creating affordable housing, and enhancing public spaces, this project will provide residents with a safer, more dignified living environment. Moreover, the redevelopment is designed to uplift the community through job creation across various sectors, from construction to healthcare, education, and retail, ensuring that residents benefit directly from the transformation. At the core of the project, we hope to foster a self-sustaining, resilient community, empowering residents to take part in building a brighter future. Lack of Community Consultation📉 In June, Boroondara Council adopted its 2024/25 Budget with over $280M in revenue and $267M in expenditures. Without community consultation, can we truly meet our city’s needs? 🤔 2. Silenced Community Voices🗣️ This year, community input was only considered for the 2025/26 budget, and the Engage Boroondara survey was discontinued. 😔 3. Learning from Other Councils📝 Stonnington and Port Phillip involve residents in budget decisions through participatory budgeting. Why not us, Boroondara? 🌟 4. Rebalancing Priorities🌳 Instead of large projects like the Kew and Hawthorn Library rebuilds, let’s focus on refurbishing buildings, enhancing green spaces, and supporting local businesses. 🌱 5. Community Insights 💡 Residents want improved sporting facilities, expanded services, and urgent climate action. Let’s listen and act! 🏃♂️🌿 6.
