Thrilled to share that I have completed my PhD in public policy. My research explores the use of diverse policy instruments in enabling an effective, efficient and equitable health workforce in context of the UK and Canadian regions. The last four years have been an incredible journey as I traversed the PhD years across the Covid-19 pandemic, global travel restrictions and embracing motherhood. I now look forward to continuing implementation driven research in the domain of regulation, governance, law and social policy. Special shout out to Prof Jeroen van der Heijden Flavia Donadelli for helping me reach the finish line. The PhD process thoroughly tests one’s resilience and I cannot thank the universe more for helping me find such great supervisors. Special thanks to Prof Karl Lofgren for taking up the supervision in the last critical months and helping me navigate the process of writing, defense and revisions. To my examiners Prof @Amanda Wolf Tim Tenbensel @Azal Singh Bali for their critical review in refining the final thesis arguments. Last but not the least to all the incredible people - academicians, health care professionals, researchers, regulators and senior government officers across England, Scotland, Ontario and Nova Scotia who responded to cold emails, agreed for interviews and shared their insights which enabled rich data and analysis. I recently had a conversation with a brilliant man I deeply admire and respect as a mentor and physician. Our conversation revolved around the importance of stewardship as an essential component of medical science. According to Wikipedia, stewardship is an ethical value that embodies the responsible planning and management of resources. In your daily scientific or medical practice for the month of April, which is also National Minority Health Month, I encourage each of you to challenge yourself to be highly reflective and self-critical in your role as a steward of your discipline. What are your resources and are you managing them well? What could you do to be a better steward of your resources under the lens true of health equity? What are the tough questions your field isn't yet asking or is avoiding that could be critical to equal access to optimal health outcomes for all ethnicities?

Pascal Losambe, Ph.D. trains educators in navigating difficult conversations around politics and election season. As I explored his resources, I found much to be impressed by: 1. His use of role-play, which is, scientifically, an incredibly effective tool for skills-based learning. 2. His focus on accessibility and inclusivity, which is so important, but he went a step above that to emphasize establishing a foundation of general comfort and safety! Our nervous systems are designed to protect us, and we cannot be truly open to hard conversations when our amygdala and entire endocrine and nervous systems are hypervigilant because we are unsafe or because we feel unsafe. This will lead to defensiveness, rather than openness. 3. The importance of establishing goals and systems so conversations are constructive and not traumatic, divisive, or, God forbid, triggering. So many well-intentioned humans forget the importance of establishing and upholding norms, moderating difficult conversations, planning where and when these conversations will occur, and then following up after! So much of my work teaching Health, PE, and the gamut of academic subjects to students in prisons, treatment centers, and second chance adult education programs resonates with Dr Losambe’s approach, and I found myself shouting “yes!!!! He gets it!” I hope I get the opportunity to attend a training someday, and would love to dialogue further, if my experience is ever helpful to your work. Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health Executive and Continuing Education: Leadership Development to Advance Equity in Health Care Across the country, for many conditions, health disparities adversely affect groups of people who have systematically experienced greater social and / or economic obstacles to health based on characteristics historically linked to discrimination or exclusion. These inequities do not just affect the individual; they affect the entire health of our community. Health disparities are unfair, avoidable and remediable. We can achieve health equity by being actively committed to addressing these inequities in healthcare.
