🌏 Excited to be presenting the opening keynote at the #OEGlobal2024 Conference in Australia— a first for this event! My talk, titled Reclaiming Data, Reclaiming Culture: Indigenous Self-Determination in Digital Research Infrastructure, will address the critical role of effective data governance in advancing Indigenous self-determination and preserving cultural heritage. 🗓️ 𝐖𝐞𝐝𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝟏𝟑 𝐍𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 "Nothing about us, without us" is more than a principle—it’s a necessity. Indigenous data assets face vulnerabilities such as loss, limited discoverability, and misuse. Many historical approaches to Indigenous data have eroded trust, emphasising a need for research infrastructures to authentically value and embrace Indigenous ways of knowing. I’ll discuss initiatives like the Language Data Commons of Australia (LDaCA), Indigenous Data Network and the HASS & Indigenous Research Data Commons (#HASS & #Indigenous RDC). We’re working towards a future where data serves the research needs and priorities of Indigenous communities. Looking forward to contributing to this global conversation on open education and Indigenous self-determination through governance! Thrilled by the African Ministries endorsing the groundbreaking Continental Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy at the recent 2nd Extraordinary Session of the Specialized Technical Committee on Communication and ICT! As Dr. Amani Abou-Zeid powerfully stated, "For us Africans, Artificial Intelligence presents tremendous opportunities. It's a driving force for positive transformation, economic growth, and social progress." I absolutely agree that this is a giant leap forward in harnessing AI for Africa's well-being, social good, and economic development. The Continental AI Strategy, alongside the African Digital Compact, aligns perfectly with the African Union's Digital Transformation Strategy (2020-2030) and Agenda 2063. This is a powerful move towards fostering digital technologies across all sectors and achieving Africa's long-term development goals. #AfricaAIDigitalization or #AUAgenda2063.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a formidable technology with the potential to boost industrial output and productivity. At the same time, if left unbridled, it could significantly disrupt the labor market and our social fabric. A human-centric & ethical AI is important.
