Clay Ostrom from Map and Fire analyzed 3000 b2b brands. He found only one third of b2b brands were differentiated.
You can differentiated based on product or service. Differentiated products have higher margins as long as it is valued by the customer. Orange drill bit not valued. Drills that are lighter, run longer on charge, have more torque or spin faster to get the job done quicker are valued.
Differentiated brands earn a higher margin. Think of the old Michelin Tire commercials with the child in a car seat.
