The landscape of college athletics is at a critical juncture. Special Counsel Doug DePeppe, Esq. recently co-authored an article published by Sports Illustrated exploring the unintended consequences of the NCAA’s proposed NIL settlement—a decision that could jeopardize 25,000 roster spots in non-revenue sports, disproportionately affecting Olympic athletes and underrepresented student-athletes. Big news from the world of college sports! Last month, UNLV quarterback Matthew Sluka made headlines when he quit his football team over an unfulfilled NIL deal worth $100,000. NIL, or "Name, Image, and Likeness," allows student-athletes to be compensated while maintaining their collegiate eligibility—a major shift since the Supreme Court’s decision in NCAA v. Alston. With NIL deals, athletes can secure sponsorships and promotional deals, like the inclusion of real players' names and likenesses in EA Sports' upcoming NCAA Football '25. However, these deals can be complex, requiring careful negotiation and review to ensure compliance with NCAA rules. This is a reminder for both athletes and advertisers: work with trusted professionals to protect your interests! #NIL #CollegeFootball #StudentAthletes #NCAA

Love this from the Fairfield University women's hoops crew. Reminiscent of the ad posting Topgolf put out into the world after Tiger Woods' official split from Nike in terms of its simplicity and "old school" feel. It's a good reminder. PR doesn't have to be expensive. Creating buzz doesn't always mean an event. High production costs aren't necessarily a pre-requisite. Sometimes, you just need to be a little clever in delivering the message. Well done, Stags. Go get that ranking. #brandmarketing #communications #pr
Fairfield University Women’s Basketball is on a 24-game winning streak and has only lost one game this season. However, the school was still seeking its first-ever ranking in the AP or USA Today Top 25. So, they created their own resumé. Now, for the first time in program history, the Stags are ranked in a national poll—coming in at #25.

Big news for Ohio’s student-athletes! Governor Mike DeWine signed an executive order allowing Ohio colleges and universities to directly compensate student-athletes for their Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) rights. This step ensures Ohio remains competitive as other states adopt similar measures and aligns with the evolving landscape of collegiate athletics. While state funds won’t be used, this move reinforces Ohio’s commitment to fairness and opportunity for student-athletes. Be on the lookout to see how this shapes the future of sports in Ohio! Are we paying attention to what is happening to the smaller, private college sports programs? Great Forbes article by #PennGSE Professor Dr. Karen Weaver at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education as an introduction to the changing landscape of collegiate athletics. So much of the focus is on NCAA Division I programs, but that narrow view leaves out so much of the post-secondary athletic population. Playing sports in college is an honor that so few high school athletes experience. So, when the opportunity arises, how are students able to maximize their chance to continue to play? NCAA Divisions I, II, and III are certainly options, but we also have to keep NAIA and NJCAA schools in the conversation. If the research is showing that NCAA DIII schools are in jeopardy, what then is the fate of programs in the other athletic organizations? In Baltimore City schools, student-athletes comprise the largest number of graduates in the district. I work with these students every day. I only hope that they continue to have a college - NCAA DII or DIII, as well as NAIA and JUCO - to attend and live out their aspirations as students and athletes. #LinkedInsports
