As part of my integrated masters placement, I was tasked with conducting an independent critical review of literature, on a topic of my choosing. I was fortunate enough to be advised by Roman Biek, an accomplished Professor of Disease Ecology and Molecular Epidemiology at the University of Glasgow. After careful discussion, we settled on exploring the current state of Rabies Virus (RABV), in terms of its distribution amongst carnivores which may or may not serve as infection reservoirs of the virus. RABV is a neglected tropical disease that claims more than 59,000 human lives every year. All mammals are susceptible to infection, which in turn highlights the sheer versatility of the virus, as well as the dangers that it poses to both human and animal health. 🐺 ⚡ 👨🔬 As it stands, understanding the transmission dynamics of the disease remains one of the greatest challenges of the 21st century. As a result, periodic reviews of current literature are paramount to informing future research into this subject. Thus, my review was titled: 'Wild Carnivores as Infection Reservoirs of Rabies Virus (RABV): Spatial and Temporal Changes in Species Reservoir Status (2017 - 2024)' Overall, I was astounded and fascinated by the literature that I reviewed, while searching for evidence to comment on such a complex topic. All in all, my review was successful in highlighting specific research deficiencies; in discovering that the relationship between RABV and many at risk species, has not yet been quantified. Upon receiving feedback for this research project, I look forward to continuing my academic development and adding this piece of work to my professional portfolio. 😊

Recent research led by Tammi Johnson, Ph.D., Texas A&M AgriLife Research assistant professor of disease ecology with RWFM, significantly contributes to nationwide efforts to better understand the role of wildlife in the epidemiology of bovine babesiosis, commonly known as cattle fever. Johnson and her team found that Nilgai, a non-native antelope species that freely ranges Southern Texas and Northeastern Mexico, do not appear to be susceptible to infection following experimental exposure to Babesia bovis. Currently, Johnson and collaborating researchers are working to replicate this study using a second cattle tick species, R. annulatus, and a different species of Babesia, B. bigemina, that also causes bovine babesiosis. “This second study will allow us to have the full picture of how nilgai respond to different species that cause bovine babesiosis,” Johnson said. Within the #VITAEproject , you will explore a large dataset gathered since 2017 on the the #OSCARObservatory that monitor vineyards planted with powdery and downy mildew resistant varieties.
