“No distance of place or lapse of time can lessen the friendship of those who are thoroughly persuaded of each other’s worth.” – Robert Southey, Poet As usual, writing a goodbye post when an outstanding leader and mentor moves on to a new phase of their career is a difficult task fraught with mixed emotions, and this is especially true today because I’m saying goodbye to a special leader – Talvis Love. Even what should be the easy part of writing this post has its challenges – for one, there’s not enough space to list all the positive experiences, lessons learned, and funny stories that occurred during my 2.5 years working for and with Talvis. First time I met Talvis, I remember that for about 30 of the 45 minutes either one or both of us were laughing. And how he made me feel at ease during that initial meeting was a preview of how great it would be to work for him. (I remember excitedly thinking to myself, “Here’s someone who’ll be able to handle the stress of dealing with me on an everyday basis.”) And due to his patience, kindness, and generosity these last 2.5 years have been truly fulfilling, exciting (mostly in a good way), and educational. Talvis was an effective leader and achieved terrific business results at Baxter. But for me and the leaders, teams, and colleagues that had the wonderful good fortune to work with him his true lasting legacy will be the way his balanced blend of determination, humor, and compassion created such a dynamic, diverse, and productive workplace. I do have one lingering regret that I’m having difficulty shaking. Over the years Talvis has tried to teach me what I could only assume was the ability to read his mind – and I just never got it. Now and again, when responding to my simple email request for an authorization or comment, his reply would consist of an entirely blank space and his signature. I worked hard on reading his brainwaves through my office wall but drew blanks. So I hope he gives up on this project – I don’t want blank replies when I email him for updates and news... I will miss you, Talvis Love. Thank you for all the gifts of knowledge, laughter, and camaraderie during our time together at Baxter. Wishing you the best of everything in this exciting new phase. #thankyou #CIO #leadershipdevelopment #modernITleader
At first glance these pictures may look similar or even just a different angle of the same landmark, the welcome sign at Baxter International's world headquarters in Deerfield IL. But in fact these two pictures are tremendously different. The first picture was taken on my first day at Baxter 3.5 years ago. I was tremendously happy to be starting as the next CIO and extremely proud to be working for a company with a long heritage of creating innovative products and making such a tremendous impact on people's lives while continuously striving to achieve its mission of saving and sustaining lives. In retrospect, I really didn't know exactly what that meant and certainly didn't understand how it would be accomplished. Don't get me wrong, I understood intellectually but I had yet to experience it for myself. That quickly changed as I onboarded, meeting colleagues across the company. At every location across all aspects of the business, everyone without fail talked about and showed how important their work was toward achieving our mission of saving and sustaining lives. This focus manifested into a culture of creative collaboration, support for your colleagues and a sense of urgency to drive change and transformation to create innovative products and solutions for customers and patients. I was quickly immersed in our mission and the many transformations that occurred over the 3.5 years. Over that time, not all was perfect as is often the case with most companies and quite frankly it was hard, challenging work. But what never wavered, was this focus on saving and sustaining lives. It created bonds and what I hope are friendships that will last a lifetime. That brings me to the second picture. I took this picture yesterday as I was leaving the campus one last time as an employee. I leave being more proud of the work that countless teams across the company have accomplished. The challenging and tough times we all worked through together, the great accomplishments that were achieved and the setbacks that were worked through made Baxter an incredibly rewarding place to be a part of. However, life sometimes unexpectedly brings us curves and wrinkles that sometimes require us to make a change both professionally and personally. This is the situation with me. I decided to leave Baxter and although I will dearly miss the great colleagues and friends I've made and the rewarding and challenging work, I look forward to the next chapter both professionally and personally. I'm thrilled about the journey I'm about to embark and will take with me the tenacity and grit, supportive collaboration with urgency and a mindset to achieve goals that drive a greater purpose. I look forward to sharing those details in a future post. So this is not goodbye to my colleagues and friends at Baxter but a "see ya later". I will be rooting you all on from the sidelines wishing you the best and future success!

Moments that matter: Recently, I overheard two Novartis associates discussing our legacy while admiring the history wall - especially our humble beginnings as a pharma company in the early 1900s. We've come a long way, and it's heartening to see that legacy still holds value. Despite the excitement of our future as a focused medicines company, I often find even Baby Boomers and Gen Yers grabbing moments like these to pause and reflect after a hearty meal at the cafeteria. Every company should have a history wall or a dedicated history zone. Historic symbols like the #stagecoach or the #GreenDot (I won't reveal the company names. Reply if you know) become embedded in an organization's thinking, serving as bywords for initiatives and providing a foundation for visual identity. Legacy is not a bad thing. However, getting stuck there is a watch out. PS: If you were expecting an inclusion post, you haven't quite figured out my craft. I rarely state the obvious. 😀 #inspired #curious #unbossed #culture #conversations Maria J. Jobin Andre Libanori Nelly Riggenbach Goran Mijuk

I have very mixed emotions today, as it is my last day with Takeda. I joined the company through an acquisition of Shire and have been at the combined company since 2016. There is so much to be proud of over my tenure here and so many friendships that I've made, and I will cherish it forever. My career wouldn't be where it is today if not for the support and trust put in me by special leaders like Luis F. Rojas and the opportunities afforded to me by a company with a mission that is so much bigger than myself or any single person. It's daunting to think about being part of an organization that is based thousands of miles away, has existed since 1781 (!!!), impacts countless people's lives in profound ways, and does so with an incredibly strong value system. The PTRB (Patient-Trust-Reputation-Business) way of thinking has left a permanent shift in my ideology and philosophy, teaching me so much about what it means to think bigger than one's self. I hope that I was able to contribute to that mission in a meaningful way, even if only transient like a single snare hit over the course of an album. It's wild to look back to when I started at the company in 2016, fresh out of business school, full of energy and ambition, and largely inexperienced in the dynamics of how a massive global organization really functions. It's one thing to have read about how executive level decisions are made, how to influence those decisions, how to be both a good leader and a good manager but it's another to practice them. I had the amazing fortune of learning under Luis F. Rojas, a person that I will always look up to as what a leader and a man should be. He taught me so much about leading with humility and integrity, challenging with respect, treating others equally and fairly regardless of their level or background, and how to be a great manager at the same time. More than all of that, he taught me how to be a better person, father, and partner. He afforded me the opportunity to be part of conversations at the highest level that I could have only dreamed of when reading about them in business school case studies. I was able to be a part of executive conversations and decisions on shaping how we supported employees at the onset of the pandemic, shaping our return-to-work policies, and informing how we prioritize the things that truly mattered to our incredible workforce. Success doesn't occur in a vacuum; it happens when everyone is aligned on a common purpose, and you are afforded the opportunity to make a difference. These accomplishments are not my own, they are of the team I was a part of. This is the lesson that Takeda has taught me and that I will take with me forever. My next step brings me back into the People Analytics space and I'm really excited to take everything I've learned to build another world-class team. It's equal parts scary and exciting to start over but that's what makes it fun! Thank you, Takeda, for everything you have done for my career.

As we embark on Interfaith Experience Month at MSD, I would like to reflect on the significant impact of interfaith understanding and collaboration on leadership, business value, talent attraction and retention and community work. Interfaith diversity brings immense value to any global organization. By cultivating an environment where different faith traditions are respected and embraced, we foster leadership skills that are inclusive, empathetic, and adaptable. Leaders who are well-versed in interfaith dynamics are better equipped to navigate diverse teams, promote collaboration, and foster a culture of mutual understanding and respect. Moreover, interfaith understanding is not just a moral imperative but also a business imperative. Embracing religious diversity yields tangible benefits by driving innovation, enhancing creativity, and fostering a more inclusive decision-making process. Diverse perspectives stemming from different faith backgrounds can lead to novel solutions and approaches that benefit our customers, patients, and shareholders. In today's job market, top talent seeks organizations where they can bring their whole selves to work. A strong commitment to interfaith inclusion and respect demonstrates to potential employees that a company values diversity and recognizes the importance of creating an environment where everyone feels valued and supported. By being an organization known for its inclusive practices, we attract and retain the best talent from diverse backgrounds, which in turn ensures a breadth of ideas and perspectives crucial for our continued success. Furthermore, our commitment to interfaith understanding extends beyond our workplace. Engaging with diverse faith communities through volunteer work, partnerships, and philanthropy enables us to make a meaningful impact within our broader communities. By demonstrating our dedication to interfaith collaboration and addressing the social challenges faced by people of all faiths, we strengthen our reputation as a responsible corporate citizen, and foster positive relationships with the communities we serve. Together, we can harness the power of interfaith collaboration to enhance leadership, create business value, attract and retain top talent, and make a positive impact in our communities. "Interfaith dialogue is a transformative journey that challenges our preconceptions, broadens our perspectives, and promotes a deeper understanding of our shared humanity." - Karen Armstrong

The 2024 Fierce Pharma Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Awards celebrate the remarkable strides made in healthcare and life sciences. I am personally moved by the efforts of organizations like Sanofi Brazil and Trinity Life Sciences, whose work is transforming lives and shaping a more equitable future. Sanofi Brazil’s recognition for Innovative DEI Training and Education resonates deeply. In a world where diverse voices are often overlooked, Sanofi’s commitment to inclusion in clinical trials is a beacon of hope. By identifying and prioritizing regions with historically underrepresented populations, they have ensured that clinical research reflects the communities it serves. What strikes me most is the human element—partnering with advocacy groups, training staff to address nuanced diversity goals, and truly listening to those impacted. Their approach has not only increased diversity in trials but has built trust and laid a foundation for meaningful change. It is a powerful reminder that health equity begins with understanding and action. Equally inspiring is Trinity Life Sciences, honored for Leading by Example in Workplace DEI. Their story hits close to home, as it shows what’s possible when inclusion becomes more than a policy—it becomes a part of the culture. By creating resource groups that celebrate individuality and revamping hiring practices to open doors for underrepresented talent, Trinity is changing lives from the inside out. Their leadership, particularly under CEO Leslie Orne, proves that when we create workplaces where everyone feels valued, we unleash innovation and foster connections that ripple outward into the communities we serve. These stories inspire me to reflect on how we, too, can be agents of change in our own spaces. This shows us that diversity and inclusion are more than initiatives—they are lifelines that bridge gaps and build a brighter, fairer future for all. #DEI #FutureOfHealthcare #BreakingBarriers #PatientCentricity
