If you're planning to build or replace a deck during the Christmas break, one of the key decisions you’ll need to make is whether to use H4 or H5 timber for your deck piles. While H4 timber might seem like a cost-saving alternative, H5 is the minimum requirement for ground contact—and it’s essential to ensure your deck is safe and compliant with building standards. There’s been some debate online about using H4 posts instead of H5 piles for deck support, with some questioning their durability. However, the Building Code and construction standards are clear: H5 timber is required for any posts or piles that come into contact with the ground. Additionally, if you're replacing an old deck, make sure you properly clear and renew the soil in the footing holes to address any decay or damage from the old structure. By sticking to H5 timber for your deck piles, you’ll ensure your project is both safe and compliant—and ready to withstand the test of time. Whether basement or above ground, concrete car parks are under a high level of situational stress. Contamination is one big issue that faces concrete, that many asset managers may be unaware of. If you are a structural engineer or asset manager responsible for a car park, the concrete needs to be protected and sealed permanently. Does the car park get sealed? This is the first thing, to stop contamination from entering. Then, does this sealer get reapplication? Topical coatings often need reapplication. This causes a lot of maintenance. When a penetrating sealer is used, no reapplication is needed, and the service life of the concrete is increased. Read on, for more about this long-term system! https://bit.ly/43xN8Xd What time is the best to start maintenance? And what is the effective method?

Why put gravel behind retaining wall? Behind every great wall lies a layer of gravel! Why is washed rock essential for drainage and stability in retaining wall construction? The primary reason drainage is essential in retaining walls is to prevent the buildup of hydrostatic pressure. When water accumulates behind a retaining wall, it creates pressure that can compromise the wall’s structural integrity, eventually leading to failure. Call us for a free consult to learn if a retaining wall will work in your outdoor space! #retainingwall #construction #hardscape #landscaping #landscapedesign
