Let's not underplay the role of Artificial Intelligence enabling humans a method for denying coverage without having to deal with the reality of despair their A.I. based decisions create. Let's also not underplay that actuarial based decisions, if just slightly readjusted, can turn large profit ratios into unacceptably and unsafe small profit ratios. Let's also not underplay that anyone wanting to replace Mr. Thompson, would lobby the board on the premise of creating higher profit margins and better investor returns if Mr. Thompson had attempted to make United Healthcare a kinder / fairer company. Finally, let's not underplay how the mainstream media has focused so much attention on Donald Trump, the deeply impactful practices of Healthcare United probably did not receive the necessary media scrutiny that might have led to a fairer balance between accepted and denied medical care requests.
Brian Thompson went from Jewell, Iowa (population 1,200) to leading 140,000 employees and overseeing $280B of revenue at one of the world’s most important companies. His mom worked as a beautician, his dad at a grain elevator—they were probably really proud when he graduated valedictorian of his 50-person high school class. He played basketball and the trombone, got elected homecoming king, and worked in soybean fields and meat processing plants during summers. While studying at the University of Iowa, he met the woman who would become his wife, with whom he would have two kids. By all accounts, he was smart, hard-working, funny, and a thoroughly decent man. This guy—not the person who murdered him in cold blood—was everything that’s right and good about America, and the American Dream. May his memory be a blessing, and may his example inspire all of us to do better.

Before entering the cannabis industry, I never fully understood why so many Americans hold such disdain for corporate America, politicians, and big businesses. My experience since joining the industry has not been entirely negative, but it has been eye-opening. It has made me more aware of the challenges in striving to make America a country of equal opportunity—not equal results. That said, it is absolutely deplorable that some Americans are celebrating the execution of a man by someone clearly suffering from mental health issues. Vigilante justice is never acceptable, and it’s troubling to see anyone praise such actions. From what I’ve seen, the victim was simply doing his job. Yes, there is rampant nepotism, and many people occupy positions they don’t deserve. There are individuals who receive substantial funding despite lacking the capability to manage their personal lives, let alone a business. It’s no surprise that many of these ventures fail. However, none of these systemic flaws justify tracking down a CEO of a corporation and murdering him in cold blood. It’s heartbreaking to witness this shift in America, where some attempt to rationalize such behavior. Violence is not the answer, and celebrating it only perpetuates division and undermines the possibility of real progress.

If we built a new healthcare system in the US from scratch, what would it look like? There's enough Agile and other process efficiency expertise on LinkedIn surely together we can get the bear-bones of a plan together which would address some of the many complaints about the current system (noted in the thread attached). Lets lead the country in taking collective accountability for the country's health outcomes and brainstorm together for a better system to rise "like a phoenix from the flames". Some action items, feel free to address in the comments: - Define healthcare in the context of patients receiving treatments, etc related to their health. - Process map of current healthcare system, inclusive of the variety of common and edge-case patients who utilize it, and the roles insurance, patients and doctors play in interacting with or facilitating the process at different stages - End-state goal. What should the system serve to provide in terms of deliverables and quality of life for the end user? What is the optimal outcome for the patient? - Value stream map of current healthcare process - How does a public program such as Medicare impact the current system? - How does employer-sponsored coverage impact the current system? - What would the inclusion of preventative care in general healthcare do to the overall health of the population over time? - Are there other areas of the industry than patient-facing where it could be made more efficient and lead to improved outcomes? - What studies currently exist which may help to determine better practices for a future-state system? - What are some aspects of the systems other countries use which could be explored to improve the current process in the US? - Listen to the Omnia and the Blizzard remix of Phoenix From the Flames and bask in the glory that is Justine Suissa's vocals on this legendary trance track.

I hope no one reading this post has ever lost a loved one to a heinous murder. When my family managed through the hellish aftermath of my grandmother’s murder, we learned: 🙏 We need to keep focus on supporting the victims and survivors when someone lapses into madness. 🙏 People get obsessed asking why the perpetrator acted as they did. 🙏In truth, we will never know the answer; the nature of these tragedies is inexplicable 🙏The media focuses on the killer, not the victim and survivors. We need to flip this. 🙏When we focus on the victim, we humanize the tragedy. In doing so, we realize the true measure of the loss. 🙏 We recognize, no matter our political or personal beliefs, we need to redouble our efforts to treat others with kindness, compassion and decency. 🙏 Whatever the ethics, practices and profits in the health/insurance industry, this is not a blueprint for murder. None. Full stop.
