He argues that if a powerful country continues to pursue hegemony and intimidate weaker nations, it is destined to fall. This perspective reflects broader Chinese views on shifting global power dynamics, particularly in the context of U.S.-China relations and the ongoing competition for global influence.

🔥 New ChinAffairs+ Issue: Mearsheimer vs. Yan Xuetong - Debating the Future of Global Order and China-U.S. Relations 🔥 In our latest edition, we delve into a thought-provoking discussion held on October 11, 2024, between John Mearsheimer, leading realist scholar, and Yan Xuetong, Dean of Tsinghua’s Institute of International Relations. This marks their third debate, following previous talks in 2013 and 2019. Mearsheimer reaffirmed his theory of "offensive realism," emphasizing that in a world without a supreme authority, nations seek regional dominance to ensure survival. He highlighted the ongoing and intensifying security competition between China and the U.S., with a particular focus on cutting-edge technology. On the other hand, Yan Xuetong argued that the core of U.S.-China competition lies in who can better shape the global order, particularly in a world trending towards anti-globalization, rather than a fight for mere survival. Don't miss the insights from this high-level debate and how it shapes perspectives on the future of global order! https://lnkd.in/gTviei_c

Join us in-person or virtually! China’s international relationships and activities are often scrutinized, and China’s interests and ambitions in the Arctic have become the topic of increasingly heated debate. In recent years, it has pursued greater influence in the region through the expansion of economic initiatives and investments. But despite much Western handwringing over the security and governance implications of Chinese involvement in the region, it's unclear how effective China‘s overtures have been. Join the Arctic Initiative for a seminar about Chinese investment in the Arctic region. Panelists will explore Arctic states' interests and concerns related to Chinese investment in the Arctic, the realities of China's economic activities, and the economic and security considerations Arctic states should weigh when engaging with China and Chinese companies. Thrilled to have Henry Lee, Anders Edstrom, Guðbjörg Ríkey Th. Hauksdóttir, and Whitney Lackenbauer speak at this event. https://lnkd.in/eACb9FFd Harvard's Belfer Center, North American and Arctic Defence and Security Network (NAADSN), High North Center for Business and Governance

Researchers in Sweden systematically analyse the relations between Russia and China, and their likely further trajectory. They find worsened relations to be more likely than improved relations, judging on the many strains and limits to the two countries’ alignment. I tend to view it much the same way, based on economic fundamentals. Economically, China is not reaching out much of a helping hand to Russia.
