Exposing the Silent Killer: Opioid Crisis With over a million lives lost in the USA alone, and Europe on high alert, the ominous shadow of opioid abuse looms large. Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid 50 times more potent than heroin, has become the drug of choice, wreaking havoc with its deadly grip. Its spread is unchecked, appearing both on the dark web and through legitimate routes. It's clear that we are facing an unprecedented emergency as death rates rise. But optimism exists even in the middle of catastrophe. We can win the battle against this disease if we join together as a worldwide community and use awareness, education, and decisive action as our main weapons. From dismantling clandestine labs to educating our youth, it's time for governments to stand together in the face of this looming threat. Let's stand united against this silent killer. Highlighting the project’s findings and featuring top experts, the event will open with a fireside chat between former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and Senior Fellow Vanda Felbab-Brown. Subsequent panels will explore U.S. drugs markets, domestic law enforcement, treatment, harm reduction, and decriminalization policies as well as the international dimensions of synthetic opioids and their spread beyond North America.

We recently hosted the first in a series of webinars on topical events in the field of alcohol and substances to be held throughout 2024 marking our 25th anniversary in providing support to communities across NI via prevention, intervention & training services. During the years 2020 to 2022, opioids were responsible in over half of the annual drug-related deaths, with an average of 118 deaths each year mentioning opioids on the death certificate. The statistics presented highlight the severity of the situation, particularly the significant increase in drug-related deaths and the increasing rise of synthetic opioids suggests a trend in the evolving nature of substances and the growing need for targeted efforts to address these issues.
