A few weeks ago, 1 in 4 managers were saying the upcoming presidential election had already caused conflict, including verbal altercations, among their employees, according to data from Resume Builder. Seven in 10 managers feared tensions would escalate after the vote (https://bit.ly/3CvZDJD). Thankfully, we’re fine. How about you?

How to persuade employers and recruiters not to use words “negotiable pay”, “discussible”, etc in their ads? Don’t they realize normal applicants just ignore such ads, and it’s a pointless waste of time?

Researching my ballot for the upcoming election, I had an interesting thought. We’re told to quantify everything on our resumes. "Add the numbers! Recruiters and hiring managers want to see measurable results!" But when was the last time you saw quantifiable achievements on a candidate's website? Politicians’ sites--essentially their resumes for the job--rarely offer numbers. It’s always, “Worked on legislation” or “Supported local initiatives.” Vagueries. Why not “Secured $X million in funding for the community” or “Increased public access to services by X%?” (You see this *sometimes*, but not very often.) Candidates for office are applying for very important jobs. They should be held to a higher standard.

"In the final vote count, you did not achieve the required number of mandates" - this is how it would have sounded if they rejected presidential candidates the same way they reject job candidates. Yesterday, while doing sourcing for a company I'm working with, I listened to the commentary on the US elections - and then it hit me: The hiring process is a kind of election campaign! Every candidate is a budding politician, and every company is a party looking for the best representatives. Here's how I see it: The company office = Campaign headquarters 🏢 Selection Committee = Professional managers 🗽 HR = Campaign managers 🎲 Recruiters = Field organizers 🚀 Employer branding manager = Spokesperson/Communications advisor 🎤 The job description? The party platform! 📜 "Revolutionary product", "Competitive salary", "Work-life balance" = Classic election promises (that we all know the value of 😏) The interview process = Primary elections 📊✍️ Screening interview = Pre-election poll (Will the candidate pass the electoral threshold?) Home assignment = First speech to the party (The candidate's opportunity to present their platform) 🏡 Home assignment review = Preliminary primaries (The professional committee examines the candidate's ability to execute on the promises in their platform) 🎯 Technical/Functional interview = Public debate (Does the candidate really understand the areas they're committing to?) HR interview = Ethics committee (Need to ensure the candidate has no skeletons in the closet that could embarrass the party) 👔 Reference checks = Reviewing past terms 👑 And in the end, like elections: ⚓ Sometimes there's a "second round" (another interview) 🚦 There's a "100-day grace period" (probation period) 🤝 And sometimes you need a "unity government" (compromise on salary) What's the most original rejection email you've received/sent?

I have been thinking about the recent General Election in recruitment terms. This is not a post with any political bias......I am old enough to realise they are all the same. Scenario: Imagine I was a job seeker sending my CV and 90 day business plan to a hiring manager (politician outlining their manifesto). I then had a panel interview with the decision makers (general public) and those decision makers (general public) decided that, compared to the competition, I was the best person for the job and put their trust and faith in me to improve the fortune of the company (country). But, wait a minute, it transpires that everything I had said to get the job (become the government) was a lie, I told the decision makers what I thought they wanted to hear to get me the job. I am not actually able to do the things I said I could during the interview. The budget I require to perform the task is unrealistic and not available, so I have asked to take the money from somewhere else........!! I would expect to be removed from that job within days, weeks, or months. As the general public we are stuck with our decision and the politicians for 4+ years....while they roll from one mistake to another. They never admit their manifesto was a pile of empty promises designed to impress us. There is no early release clause, no notice period when we realise the mistake, no refund guarantee from the recruiter, no chance to recruit a more capable replacement. 4+ years and there is nothing the decision makers can do. We are stuck with our decision, even though it has been proved they lied. Doesn't seem fair does it. There is no sales pitch, just thought the parallels were uncanny. #JustSaying #Election #MoreLiesThanAChocolateWatch

A word of advice to finish off the week... 💬 ⚠ Put the salary on your job adverts! ⚠ Don't waste yours and other people's times. People hate it. Yet companies still do it. You won't hire the best people. In fact, you'll struggle to hire. OK - now I'm off to enjoy my weekend 👋 #Recruitment #AdvertiseSalary #Adverts #Salary
