It’s been a banner year when it comes to EV charging in Canada. There are 6,703 new DC fast and Level 2 chargers in the 12-month end of March 1, 2024, according to data from Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), compiled by Electric Autonomy. That’s a 32.7 per cent increase, on the heels of a 30 per cent increase the previous year. Following a major blackout in Melbourne, power from electric vehicle batteries was fed into the national grid. And guess what? It worked — the trial was deemed a success when a small amount of electricity was produced. Now experts believe we could soon light up cities across Australia during emergencies, such as natural disasters or unexpected power outages, using V2G technology to provide backup power. bp has inaugurated a new electric vehicle charging site, called Gigahub, at its American headquarters in Houston, Texas, to expand its network of EV chargers in the US. The new bp pulse Gigahub station will be open to the public in early April 2024 and will offer 24 high-speed EV charge points with Tritium 150 kW DC fast chargers. The chargers will be integrated with the bp pulse app, allowing users to locate the site, access real-time charging availability, and connect to WiFi. bp pulse intends to deploy additional charging points at airports, major metropolitan areas, and bp-owned properties across the US. The company has received grants through several programs, including the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) and the California Energy Commission (CEC), to provide charging infrastructure at sites in California, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and Kentucky. bp not only announced plans to invest $1 billion in America's EV charging infrastructure by 2030, with $500 million invested in by the end of 2025, but also shared commitments to deliver 3,000 charge points by 2025. bp currently has 29,000 EV charge points worldwide and is aiming for more than 100,000 charging sites globally by 2030, with around 90% being rapid or ultra-fast. bp expects to increase its investment in EV charging as well as bioenergy, hydrogen, convenience, and renewables & power through the decade. Utility Week has published a story on the ‘EV charging rollout', highlighting issues created by land leases for substations and the steps UK Power Networks is taking to resolve it. It says, in the cases of National Grid and UK Power Networks, there’s been some internal discussions and changes in policy, and urges all DNOs to be aligned on those policies as well. It’s true that Net Zero presents challenges that cannot be addressed by any one organisation or sector alone. That’s why listening to industry and putting in place measures to enable them to reach their goals is vital. There’s a long way to go, but we’re passionate being flexible and taking new approaches will help meet customers’ demands.
