Here's a few reasons why BrightLife Kids is an integral part of California’s initiative to meet the needs of young people, especially those who face the greatest systemic barriers to wellness: 🧡 The need for trusted, culturally informed and responsive mental health tools for kids and caregivers who identify as part of BIPOC and/or LGBTQ+ communities is unique — and for many, that need goes unmet. 🧡 The families we support experience more stress (particularly financial stress) than other coaching populations. 🧡 When kids struggle, so do parents — caregiver mental health declines when they are concerned about their child. And when parents struggle, the whole family is impacted. 🧡 Without access to this kind of early intervention, families are forced to wait for help until they’re in crisis, when expensive emergency care is the only option. We are improving access to early intervention mental health care, especially in rural, remote, and underserved areas where traditional services are often limited or non-existent. BrightLife Kids members meet with their coaches for 1:1 live video sessions, send questions through our secure chat feature, read articles in our digital library, and attend our monthly webinars. And our Community Engagement team attends events in multiple counties each month, meeting face-to-face with hundreds of new families to explain what we do and how we can help their families manage big emotions, navigate behavioral challenges, and build skills they can all use for a lifetime. Behind the scenes, they’re meeting with school districts, superintendents, and organizations to add even more school, health, and community groups to our affiliate network. ✅Here are my 3 main challenges with obtaining good mental health support: 1) Accessibility-Limited access to therapists, counselors and specialists. Racial and ethnic minorities, LGBTQ+ individuals, and other groups face greater barriers. Overcrowded schools & insufficient funding can prevent schools from providing adequate services. A mental health “crisis” doesn’t always time well with your therapist visit! https://lnkd.in/gmJGGqsx 2) Resources-Many individuals do not have insurance that covers mental health services or have high out-of-pocket costs. https://lnkd.in/ghb9_Fdg 3) Lack of Early Intervention and Preventative Care- Many individuals wait until their mental health issues have escalated significantly before seeking help. Many mental health systems are designed to handle crisis situations rather than focus on prevention or early intervention. Brightn overcomes all three of these: www.brightnapp.com ✅Accessibility-Since Brightn is a mobile app it is available 24/7, 7 days a week. No waiting in a lobby, no appointment needed. ✅Resources- Brightn is extremely affordable, much less than copays and deductibles. At $.20 per day for a single plan and our recently added educational “scholarships” available, this app can get into the hands of more young adults and organizations. ✅Lack of early Intervention and Prevention: Brightn is a tremendous “bridge” moving further upstream than telehealth. 👉Learn more in 9 days at our upcoming Brightn Investor Webinar! 💥IF INTERESTED RSVP HERE 💥 https://lnkd.in/gTDR7Thc 🎯It’s all about providing as many different resources as possible and intervening prior to the intervention! Let’s Brightn lives together! 🤗🌞 Emilie Mauricio Carson Goodale

Nothing without us. This phrase is an important reminder from Disability Justice activists to partner with folks of many intersectional identities in all aspects of society and life. Partnership is essential to improve health equity outcomes. The folks directly impacted by disparate health outcomes have the most insight into what they need. At Shifting Frames Consulting, we partner with professional actors from the community to co-create meaningful curricula to impact health equity outcomes. We support organizations in cultivating partnerships with community members to ensure the root cause and most important needs are addressed- versus focusing on our own assumptions of what a community might need. One research team shared a great example of a co-design approach to a novel participatory project to impact mental health stigma in rural communities. ❗People in rural areas have higher rates of depression and suicide when compared with people in urban areas. ❗People in rural areas are less likely to receive mental health services, often due to inaccessibility. The researchers Rochelle Hine, Brenda Gladstone, Andrea Reupert, Charlotte (Lotti) O'Dea, Rose Cuff, Scott Yates, Anneli Silven Hagström, Dr Violette McGaw, Kim Foster share their strategies and insights, a great opportunity for all of us to integrate these practices into health equity and quality improvement efforts. There is a risk of well-intentioned folks missing the important step of partnership. We want to thank this research team for sharing one way to partner in a co-design approach with rural youth to unpack mental health stigma. #HealthEquity #NothingWithoutUs #ImplicitBiasInterruption https://lnkd.in/gf-yaADa

Today, Surgo Health, in partnership with Pivotal Ventures and SHOWTIME/MTV Entertainment Studios, has launched the Youth Mental Health Tracker (YMHT), which aims to uncover the complexities of youth mental health and wellbeing in the US, providing actionable insights that equip communities, policymakers, and healthcare providers to foster environments where young people can truly thrive. Some key findings revealed by the tracker: ❗️Despite challenges, many young people are thriving, taking positive action to support their mental health and expressing optimism. ❗️Parental support and acceptance is vital to youth care seeking. ❗️LGBTQ+ youth face greater challenges and lack support - they are three times more likely to feel dissatisfied with life. Access the tracker and dive deeper into the findings here: https://lnkd.in/euSKfGBV

Online resources offer a vital lifeline for young people from communities of color, the LGBTQ+ community, or those who already have symptoms of moderate to severe depression are especially reliant on online tools. New research and report from Hopelab and Common Sense Media on how teens take charge of their mental health and wellbeing by embracing online mental health tools: https://lnkd.in/gKuEnciB ⚡ Key findings⚡ ▪️ While social media and the web are important sources of mental health information, most young people report that they take extra steps to verify what they find. ▪️ Online therapy has increased access to mental health support and is generally seen as helpful by those who seek it. ▪️ More than half of young people have used an app to support their mental health or well-being. For Latinx and Black young people, limitations related to in-person therapy — such as accessibility, affordability, and cultural stigma — may contribute to higher rates of app usage. ▪️ More than half of young people who have sought online therapy in the past year did so through a private practice or medical setting; three in 10 young people have used an online therapy platform through a telehealth company. ▪️ LGBTQ+ youth and young people with depressive symptoms are more likely to have searched online for behavioral health information, to have used online therapy, and to have used apps to support their mental health or well-being. #ConnectedWellbeing #DigitalHealth #MentalHealthMatters #TeenMentalHealth #YouthMentalHealth

🚨 Exciting News: The Youth Mental Health Tracker (YMHT) is officially live! I’m incredibly proud to share this milestone in Surgo Health's ongoing efforts to bring novel data to improve health outcomes for young people. In collaboration with Pivotal Ventures and SHOWTIME/MTV, we’ve developed the nation’s most comprehensive platform on youth mental health and wellbeing. This groundbreaking tool provides critical insights from over 10,000 young people across the U.S., shedding light on the duality of youth mental health. Check it out: https://lnkd.in/eSjma3AW Here’s a glimpse of what the tracker has uncovered: - 47% of young people haven’t faced significant mental health struggles in the past two years and report being satisfied with their lives. - Youth who feel emotionally supported by their family are 1.5x more likely to feel satisfied with life (88%) compared to those without support (57%). - 50% of LGBTQ+ youth feel emotionally unsupported by their families, compared to just 25% of non-LGBTQ+ youth. Additionally, 76% of LGBTQ+ youth report facing discrimination based on gender and/or sexual orientation. This data reinforces the importance of emotional support and inclusivity in nurturing youth mental health. Let's continue working together to create a better future for young people. A HUGE shoutout to everyone who worked on this project including the Surgo team Adele Wang, PhD, Saba Alemnew, Lauren Tucker, Tomas Engelthaler, Peter Smittenaar, Sema Sgaier, Ph.D., Shehryar (Shay) Saharan, Kayleigh (Winslow) Hally and Davina Dukuly. And our funders Kelsey Noonan, Brianna Cayo Cotter, Noopur Agarwal, Jo Flattery, Meredith Goldberg-Morse. And our amazing board Cindy Liu, Laura Erickson-Schroth, Nia West-Bey, Desmond Patton, Myeshia N. Price, Amanda Lenhart and Peer Health Exchange!
