It’s been 20 days since I switched my old office address for a new one at The NorthCap University but the tremendous change still doesn’t quite feel real yet. Even though I am now wearing the brand-new badge of 'Assistant Manager (Marketing & Communications)' in this fresh environment, it all feels surprisingly surreal—like the chaotic roller coaster I expected never arrived (for good). The reason? It’s the people. From Day 1, the heartbeat of NCU, the team members, has been nothing but warm and welcoming. Starting with Chirag Talwar (CT) Sir, who has been not just a manager but an astute mentor, a mindful listener, and an empowering leader—he stands tall for his entire team. Mind you, he has the sweetest touch of lightheartedness in one hand and the bitterest coffee in the other. And, of course, there’s Sahiti K., who has been like a wellspring of knowledge and support, always on her toes to offer insights on blogs, newsletters, brochures, event marketing, and more—that will help me thrive in this new role. In just a few weeks, I have already had the opportunity to contribute to impactful projects—creating content for the branding of the Placement Cell, drafting press releases, managing social media, and filming videos with international delegates. Additionally, I have collaborated with faculty to organize student-centric activities for special events. It’s been a dynamic start, and I am excited for what lies ahead. Whether it's people management, content strategy, performance analysis, market research, print media, stakeholder engagement, or cohesive messaging across touchpoints—the journey has already begun. To the entire team at NCU, this would be far less meaningful without your camaraderie and warmth. Truly grateful for the interactions, shared laughs, and the strong sense of belonging here. With a sprinkle of creativity, I am eager to see what challenges and successes the next chapter holds as we continue shaping NCU’s voice together. P.S. Meet this month’s employee spotlight, Oliver! 👋 Oliver is our Health Sciences Advancement Officer and joined the Curtin Advancement team last year to help bring many of our wonderful health sciences projects to life. We caught up with Oliver to learn more about some of the projects he is currently working on. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐡𝐲? I love how every day is so different, whether it’s the work I’m doing or the people I meet. Engaging with those who are directly impacted by what Advancement does, even the most mundane tasks feel like a meaningful piece of the bigger picture. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐞𝐱𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮’𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐧 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐧𝐨𝐰? Many exciting things are happening in Health Sciences at the moment! I’m starting to plan Curtin’s booth for this year’s Telethon Family Festival. It will be my first time managing it, but I have a wealth of experience to draw upon. I volunteered last year shortly after I started at Curtin, and it was wonderful to interact with families involved in some of Curtin’s wonderful research projects. I’m looking forward to putting my own spin on it this year! 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐟𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤? I’m very much into rock climbing. I’m actually petrified of heights so I started climbing as a way to face that fear, but I grew to really love the physicality of it and the problem-solving. It’s so much fun bringing new people into the sport and watch them crush it, especially when they initially doubt their abilities. In Summer 2014 I started my job as a Presidential Innovation Fellow in Washington, D.C. Six weeks earlier I had received a call admitting me to the program. My husband and I packed up our family (with our 15 month-old in tow) and said goodbye to San Francisco. I thought the move to D.C. was about changing jobs. Turns out it was about changing my life. Fast forward to last week and I found myself back in front of The White House – smiling just as wide, but with a completely different perspective. When we feel stuck, making change feels so urgent. Seeing results feels so urgent. But I don’t think we talk enough about the ripple effects of our decisions – about how one single choice creates long-term, life-altering impacts on our careers, on our lives, and on who we are becoming. Yes, many of us want to make changes in our lives. And yes, it’s ok to hope it happens quickly (because sometimes it can!). But what’s delighting me about this story isn’t the fact that I made one change back in 2014. It’s that the change I bravely chose to make, all those years ago, is still bearing fruit. I want to talk about something that really caught my attention—how we can create better working environments and opportunities in the world of research. There’s this great initiative by the European Commission, in collaboration with Member States and stakeholders, that focuses on making research careers more sustainable. It’s all about ensuring stable pay, pension schemes, healthier working environments, and opportunities to develop new skills. For someone like me, involved in leadership and innovation, this is a game-changer. What’s inspiring is how they’re modernizing research management and creating incentives and rewards for researchers. They’re even working to make it easier for professionals to transition between sectors seamlessly. This kind of forward-thinking is exactly what we need to foster creativity and long-term impact in research. Challenge Day with G&E Partners 💪✨ Tuesday, October 29, was an invaluable experience 🌟, filled with real-world problem-solving opportunities brought by G&E Partners at Leeds Beckett University. This event gave me the chance to expand my understanding 📚 of the Insights Discovery model, which provides a framework for understanding individual behaviors. I learned how these insights can be applied in practical situations, such as hiring new employees, managing underperforming staff, and recognizing outstanding performance. 🎯 Students from various nationalities 🌍 and academic backgrounds were assigned to teams 🤝, where we worked together on data analysis 📊, research, and brainstorming 💡 to develop effective solutions for real-world challenges within a limited timeframe ⏰. Through this experience, I not only strengthened my skills in data analysis, leadership, creativity, and innovation 🚀, but also gained valuable feedback from G&E Partners’ representatives, @Eliza Martinez Ones and Finley Howell. Observing other teams’ presentations expanded my perspective and allowed me to learn from their approaches, while also building connections and friendships 💫. Some of our best work to date! Here’s how my team built an HBCU Fellowship Program that was recognized as the first of its kind in PR Week👇🏾 ColorVizion Lab partnered with a global public relations firm representing brands such as McDonald's, Sephora, and Xbox. The EVP of Global Diversity & Inclusion had a vision to create a talent pipeline for aspiring PR professionals from HBCUs and Black Greek Letter Organizations. The firm gave us a one-page outline, and within six months, we turned it into a comprehensive program that spanned eight markets. ✅ In the first year, we achieved a 40% intern conversion rate and established partnerships with Clark Atlanta University and FAMU’s Mass Media Departments. What was even more rewarding was seeing the transformation within the company. Leadership took pride in their culture, talent, and experience. They were able to reach their goals while working within their budget and bandwidth.  There was also a shift in the employee experience. Candidates enjoyed the recruitment process, transitioned into full-time roles, and brought creative and innovative ideas to their client teams. ✨Healthy workplaces exist.  ✨Great leadership exists.  ✨Incredible talent exists. What an energising week! I've been surrounded by fresh ideas, bold thinking, and people who are ‘giving it a go’. I’m sharing here, because ‘giving it a go’ can be infectious. Team Time Spending face-to-face time with some of my team was a real highlight. Learning from their skills, talent and experiences always pushes my own thinking. Together, we came up with some new ways to create even greater impact through reach and engagement in innovation. Watch this space. Inspiring the Next Generation Visiting S2/Year 8 students at the Royal High School in Edinburgh to talk about future careers reminded me of the Paul Arden quote of ‘Don’t be afraid of silly ideas’. These students certainly weren’t. The students explored how marketing, communications and people shape businesses – and how bold ideas are often the best. They effortlessly wove humour into their concepts, always combining the emotive with the engaging. It worked. Giving it a Go On Friday, my son’s band - Parma Violence - released their first single. At an average age of 16, I’m so impressed at their commitment and bravery in making it happen. Whatever happens now, they’ve created something brand new and shared it with the world. https://lnkd.in/epm2g_rd The whole week reminded me that a lot of leadership and strategic change is about making sure voices, opinions, experiences and even (especially) the “silly ideas” are heard. When we’re working increasingly hard to gain traction with messaging, and to engage and reach new audiences, we need to commit to staying curious, listening, and giving it a go.
