There are lots of resources available for organizations looking for help with their business continuity plans. Did you know there’s an ISO standard related to business continuity? ISO 22301 is the international standard for security and resilience in business continuity management systems. It provides a framework for protection and recovery from disruption to your business. I also highly recommend the book “How to Not Kill Your Business: Grow Your Business in Any Environment, Navigate Volatility, and Successfully Recover When Things Go Wrong,” by Erika Andresen. It’s only about 100 pages but contains some valuable tips about how to survive disaster in your business. The key is to develop and implement a robust business continuity plan proactively. Steps for developing a Business Continuity Plan: 1️⃣Estimate risks Determine the probability of occurrence and the level of impact on specific areas and processes. 2️⃣Identify your resources Consider the availability of human resources, computer technologies and systems, databases and backup systems, infrastructure and emergency connections, insurance, and others. 3️⃣Define your reactive strategy There must be an order to the steps, and they need to have logical coherence. You need to know under what circumstances a particular action should be implemented. 4️⃣Delegate responsibilities Everything depends on the type and number of employees you have. 5️⃣Test your strategy Evaluate whether your BCP actually meets your business needs. The best way to do this is through simulations to test both the strategies and the execution by your staff. 6️⃣Write a document and communicate your plan Create a document containing all the conditions, guidelines, and activities that you must consider in the face of certain contingencies. This document must include all the necessary manuals and instructions on what each party involved needs to do. Finally, train your staff and keep raising awareness about the risks to create a culture of prevention. #BCP
