🇺🇸Trump or Harris, Latin America will remain a low priority for the U.S. Election season is almost over in Latin America, with a presidential runoff in Uruguay later this month the sole date left in the schedule. But the upcoming U.S. vote will be followed much more closely by regional leaders, as many will have to adjust their strategies based on whether Kamala Harris or Donald Trump wins the election. With this in mind, The Brazilian Report reached out to Peter Hakim, president emeritus of the Inter-American Dialogue, a Washington-based think tank focused on the affairs of the Western Hemisphere. But Mr. Hakim is quick to clarify: the feeling is not mutual. Whoever wins, he believes, will make Latin America a low priority, as U.S. sights are set on other parts of the globe, with only a few issues being potential exceptions. 🔗Read the full article and interview by Lucas Berti here 👇 https://lnkd.in/gH2iNXVV #Elections #UnitedStates #LatinAmerica

In November’s presidential election, U.S. voters will choose between the contrasting foreign policy visions of former President Donald Trump and his opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris. The result will shape an increasingly fraught relationship between the U.S. and China, the world’s two foremost powers. Strategic competition between the two is poised to intensify whether former President Trump or Vice President Harris assumes the U.S. presidency in January 2025. In our new report, we examine the implications of the upcoming U.S. election for the country’s relationship with China and highlight that whoever wins in November should take steps to keep manageable competition from becoming an existential struggle. 📌 For more information, read our new report: https://lnkd.in/e4sh_ij3

How should Europe react to the U.S. presidential election? This is the question I address in my recent contribution to POLITICO Europe. In short, massive strategic changes in U.S. politics are underway regardless of the election’s outcome. Europe must thus advance - independently of the outcome - by enhancing defense capabilities, strengthening capital markets, and securing trade agreements. As the U.S. focuses increasingly on the Indo-Pacific and competition with China, Europe must maintain strong transatlantic ties, while expanding its strengths. The year 2024 marks a pivotal moment in both the European Union and the United States, with significant elections shaping the political and economic landscapes. We just wrapped up our Panel 3 delving into the implications of these elections on economic security, exploring key questions with a diverse group of experts. Here are some of the key takeaways: Reinhard Bütikofer, Member of the European Parliament, discussed how economic security is on the political agenda ahead of the upcoming European elections and the opportunities on the horizon for a transatlantic cooperation. Tom Feddo, The Rubicon Advisors, LLC, pointed out that, in respect of the outcome of the elections, there may be both challenges and opportunities for economic stability, prosperity and security. He discusses the potential Biden 2.0 or Trump 2.0 scenario and the upcoming role of Congress and legislation. Dr. Fran Burwell, Distinguished Fellow at the Atlantic Council's Europe Center, elaborates on the opportunities for greater collaboration between the world’s democracies on economic security issues and how the dialogue between the EU and US could change post-election. John Beahn, Partner at Milbank LLP, discussed how the private sector can prepare itself for the different potential election outcomes on both sides of the Atlantic. Irrespective of the election results, all panelists underlined the importance of transatlantic dialogue to address common economic challenges and to consider areas for cooperation and collaboration. We thank all panelists for sharing their views and Eric K. Hontz, Director of CIPE, for moderating this enriching session.

Given the packed political calendar in Latin America, we thought it would be useful to share this chart. As the region gears up for a wave of presidential elections in 2025 and 2026, the political ground is shifting—some of the left-leaning incumbents are seeing their approval ratings drop, while right-wing newcomers like Argentina’s Milei are enjoying an immense surge in popularity. The results may not only redefine the region’s democratic trajectory but also foster more enduring and positive ties with the United States for years to come. Note: 2nd rounds are "if needed".
