Our youth had a blast last week in our Makerspace! ✨ For this project, they got creative making shapes from stars to trapezoids using glow sticks. Their energy was contagious as they explored their imagination and had fun with this hands-on geometry activity. We had an amazing experience conducting a workshop at York University during their largest hackathon, CTRL+HACK+DEL. Our workshop focused on using OpenCV for game development, where we introduced participants to AI, then moved on to OpenCV basics, all the way to advanced topics such as object detection, color detection, and hand detection for gesture-based gaming. We prepared hands-on code examples, practical demos, and engaging project materials, even building a website so participants could easily access everything. It was so rewarding to receive such positive feedback from the hackers at the end – some even reached out on LinkedIn to share their thoughts and appreciation. This workshop was a true team effort. It was amazing to have Hasan, Abhishek Sharma, Mubassir Mohmed Sapa, and Vinh Minh Dang as part of the team. Together, we made this happen! I'm excited to share a project I've been working on: a game developed in C++ using the Raylib library. This game is a modern take on the classic Space Invaders, with a nostalgic environment and some added features. These features include power-ups that enhance the gameplay experience, making it even more fun and engaging. There are three power-ups that players can use, which are awarded randomly after completing a level. Pressing D generates a ball that destroys aliens in its path, with the ball's radius determined by the length of the press. Pressing S creates a crosshair for sniping aliens, and pressing M activates a machine gun. Throughout the development process, I learned a lot about the various functions offered by the Raylib library, how to display animations on the screen, and how to manage transitions between different game screens. I utilized Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) principles, which facilitated a structured and modular design, making management of game entities and interactions more efficient. The software is compiled using a WebAssembly compiler called Emscripten, which allows the game to run on web platforms. The game is playable only on a computer and not on mobile devices. Now that the second semester of my Sophomore year is over at Endicott College, I would love to reflect on another project that emerged! As seen previously, I created Five Nights at Gully's for my Visual Programming I class and made another game alongside that for a game development class. I decided to take things up a notch and tackle something new and challenging for myself. Discovering that it was possible to create and use 3D Graphics in LibGDX, I took it upon myself to make a game using 3D Graphics to give myself a deeper understanding of working in three-dimensional space. This proved challenging since unlike your usual game engine, almost everything had to be made from scratch. Project Redhood is a game where you play as Redhood (Grown up Red Riding Hood) who seeks justice for other fairy tale characters, in the game you would encounter villains of other fairy tales. This project serves as a prototype and only includes some levels, as well as a mini-boss fight. Given the amount of time to simultaneously balance learning 3D and delivering a full-fledged project, while being a student-athlete and attending many other classes, I wasn't expecting a full game, but instead something to show my learning experience. I won't go over everything in this post as that would make it extremely long, but I touched up in Blender, Bullet API Physics, Syncing Terrain's Geometric Nodes to the Physics World, Character Controllers & Physics, Animation in Blender (NLA Tracks), Linear Algebraic Concepts with Vectors, Matrixes, and Quaternions. Finally, as I was working in LibGDX, GDX-GLTF, and Mundus, I had some exposure to working in large codebases, reading and understanding what each code block means, and applying it to my own game, and sometimes creating my own frameworks that connect the logic in both codebases. (i.e connecting Bullet Physics with Mundus GameObject). This as a whole strengthened my software engineering skills. I love creating games that bring joy to the people who play or watch them. GIZMO hits the dance floor at Cochiti Elementary☀️ Students made lava lamps to learn about chemical reactions and explored computer programming with robotic cars during workshops lead by Sandia volunteers at a STEM outreach event. However, Sandia’s robotic dog, GIZMO, stole the show by jumping, shaking hands and dancing with students during a demo. “I think it’s really important for them to experience things like this because it broadens their horizons,” Cochiti Elementary teacher Melanie Harris said. “It exposes them to new things, and it encourages them to dive into worlds they might not know.” Full story here: https://bit.ly/4aUvuiq

✨ Day 9 of the 160 Days of GeeksforGeeks Challenge: Balancing Heights! ✨ Today’s challenge was all about striking a balance—finding the minimum difference between the tallest and shortest towers after height adjustments. Here’s what I worked on: Problem Statement 📝: Given an array arr[] of tower heights and a positive integer K: For each tower, you can either increase or decrease its height by K (exactly once). The task is to determine the minimum possible difference between the tallest and shortest towers after modifications, ensuring no tower height becomes negative. This problem pushed me to think critically about range manipulation and edge cases. 💡 🔗 What I learned today: 1️⃣ Sorting for Strategy: Sorted the array to focus on extreme values (smallest and largest). 2️⃣ Greedy Approach: Analyzed boundary cases to minimize the difference efficiently. 3️⃣ Handling Constraints: Ensured no negative heights post-modification. 💻 My approach to solving: Sort the array to manage values systematically. Modify the heights to minimize the range by checking possible scenarios involving the smallest and largest adjusted values. Carefully consider cases where reducing or increasing heights near boundaries has the most significant impact. This challenge highlighted the power of structured thinking and greedy algorithms.
