Is AI Better at Staying Calm Than Humans? Emotional maturity means staying calm and not getting offended easily. AI always remains neutral and never takes things personally. Efficiency vs. Humanity: A False Choice in the Era of AI In the rush to embrace AI—and I’m sprinting too—we risk over-indexing on efficiency and overlooking humanity. Lean in for this: humanity is the key to unlocking efficiency. Take this fascinating study by Dr. Yehonatan N. Turner and colleagues. They found that when radiologists were given patient photographs alongside X-ray images, their diagnostic accuracy improved dramatically. *More Meticulous Readings: Radiologists interpreted images more carefully when photos were included. "The radiologists involved in the study commented that while the addition of the photo did not lengthen the time spent reading, it was a factor in how meticulously they interpreted the images." *Improved Detection of Incidental Findings: Without patient photos, approximately 80% of incidental findings were missed. "Approximately 80 percent of the radiologic incidental findings reported originally were not reported when the photograph was omitted from the file." (I had to read that twice… then verify it three different ways. Yes, AI was one of the ways. It’s bonkers.) This study reminds us that connecting with the human side of our work—empathy, presence, and attention—is not a distraction; it’s a multiplier for better results. It's been over a year since Andrew Ng's influential TED Talk (time has really flown by), and his message still resonates: "We can build a much richer society if we can enable everyone to help write the future." His talk aimed to address growing fears associated with AI, from job loss to ethical implications. He spoke of a future where businesses, regardless of size or sector, could harness AI to improve their operations. He was spot on—ops is where we see the biggest ROI and human-augmented accuracy improvements. Like Andrew, I believe in AI's potential, but I’m not naive to its risks. “AI, do my job for me” 5 things AI can't fix: 1) Vision AI can provide insights ↳ but your vision is unique and yours alone. 2) Innovation AI can provide general frameworks, ↳ but can’t create your original ‘beak through’ ideas. 3) Leadership AI can assist in decision-making ↳ but it can’t inspire and lead others like you can. 4) Skills AI can assist with learning ↳ but only you need can put that skill into practise. 5) Connections AI can fake emulate empathy ↳ but it can’t re-create deep connections between you and others. What I say to managers, leaders, and workers is this: AI is not going to replace humans, but rather, humans with AI will replace humans without AI. Get ready, be prepared. Ideally, AI is not here to replace humans, but rather to empower humans with new capabilities and efficiencies that will ultimately replace outdated methods and elevate our potential. #AI #FutureOfWork #Leadership #Innovation

Humans have always been better at inventing tools that change the way we live and work than adapting to the big changes these tools cause. Consider for a moment how the internet has given us instant access to gigabytes of data and yet has made us more distracted. Or how social media has enabled us to be more connected than ever, and yet can also alienate or isolate us. In the same way, AI has the potential to enhance the human experience of work, or it could lead us into an automated, robotic, overwhelming, and uninspiring work reality. Which will it be? Humans are good at inventing tools, but not as good at adapting to the change these tools can cause. While there has been much focus on the technical impacts and potential dark side of AI, the authors’ research has shown that AI can enhance and empower leadership, actually helping make leaders more human. To do this, we need to invest just as much in the development of our human potential as we do in harnessing the power of AI. This means focusing on the core leadership qualities of awareness, wisdom, and compassion, as well as taking on a both/and mindset.
