It’s been busy at BMF! From the launch of our microArch D1025 printer and new high-performance materials to the grand opening of the UltraThineer Lab at our headquarters in Maynard, MA, our team had a lot to share at Formnext - Where ideas take shape. Our CEO, John Kawola, sat down with Vanesa M. Listek to discuss these exciting milestones and what’s to come in the micro #3Dprinting space as demand for ultra-precise manufacturing grows. Check out the full article in 3DPrint.com

Today, 3DPrint.com published my latest guest article, in which I explore alternative solutions to the crisis that the AM industry is currently facing. I also draw attention to the big elephant in the room - focusing on how the 3D printer works rather than on what customers expect. Despite today's publication, the article was written shortly after the RAPID + TCT trade show, and literally just a few hours after the events of July 3rd. Therefore, it does not include some things that happened afterwards, as well as the conclusions we have reached since then. I encourage you to read and comment. As usual, it is somewhat critical, but constructive! #betrue #bedifferent #shareandspread

MTP-Based Integration Broadens Functional Scope of Photonic Devices LIGENTEC, X-FAB and X-Celeprint have pooled together their respective resources to enable the production of a new generation of photonic devices. A chiplet approach will be applied - allowing the optimal materials/processes to be used for each particular element. All of the distinct elements will then be combined together, via use of micro transfer printing (MTP), to create sophisticated hybrid solutions capable of attaining elevated performance parameters and delivering superior functionality capabilities. Until now, bringing together different chiplets to create photonic devices has proved challenging, with no integrated supply chain available for customers to rely upon. The collaborative efforts just announced look to address this issue. To begin with, Ligentec will incorporate photodetectors onto its low-loss silicon-nitride (SiN) platform through use of the MTP capabilities offered by X-Celeprint. Then X-FAB will be responsible for ramping up these activities to large scale fabrication, so that volume demands can be met. "After years of intensive R&D, we are seeing significant uptake and interest in Micro Transfer Printing. The technology readiness level in photonics integration has reached the stage to bring it to the market, offering customers a powerful solution to overcome the challenges of hybrid PICs," X-Celeprint's CEO, Kyle Benkendorfer, comments. Ligentec's CEO, Thomas Hessler, adds; "No single material system can meet the diverse requirements of photonics... 🙌 We are excited about our latest machine at the Institute of Microsystems Technology at Hamburg University of Technology for direct printing of metals and dielectrics on 3D surfaces. The XTPL Delta printing system uses an ultra-precise deposition technology that combines a high-viscosity paste, a micro-nozzle and a precise positioning system to print conductive lines of only a few micrometers in width on various substrates and steps. In projects A04 and A08, this new technology is used to manufacture novel 3D devices like smart microreactors and Lagrangian sensors. Other projects within the CRC 1615 will also benefit from the machine, as it enables the integration of several smart materials into a small-scale test reactor. This new equipment complements our toolbox for the development and fabrication of 3D microsystems [1]. We'd like to thank the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - German Research Foundation for funding of the CRC SMART Reactors (project no. 503850735) including the purchase of this important instrumentation.
