As CEO of Bonsai Leadership Group, I help nonprofit organizations recruit and retain talented professionals. Author, "When Black Women Rise." 🌳
We are at it again with one of our most favorite clients, Ocean Conservancy. My team and I at Bonsai Leadership Group LLC are excited to partner with Ocean Conservancy in its search for a Senior Communications Manager, Biodiversity & Arctic. The Senior Communications Manager, Biodiversity & Arctic will oversee strategic communications efforts for Ocean Conservancy’s Biodiversity portfolio, with an emphasis on Ocean Conservancy’s Arctic Program, which includes all of Alaska. The minimum starting salary for this position is $72,035 annually, with an anticipated starting salary dependent upon the hired candidate’s location, qualifications, background, and experience. Now, before you apply, let me drop a gem or two about how you can stand out as a strong candidate for this role. First, applicants with exceptional writing skills, experience developing communications campaigns with an advocacy impact, a track record of successful media placements across media types, and a strong sense of indigenous knowledge will stand out to our recruiters. Secondly, Ocean Conservancy embraces a hybrid work structure requiring employees to reside in one of the following US states: AK, CA, DC, FL, MD, OR, VA, TX, WA, and WV. No relocation available. Finally, your cover letter matters! We know, we know. You have probably heard that no one reads a cover letter anymore, but for our clients, it can absolutely make the difference. Your resume tells us about your professional experience, but your cover letter can tell us who you are, what this role is the next best step in your career journey, and the unique value you can bring to a role in alignment with the professional skills and experience desired for the position. DO NOT JUST COPY THE JOB DESCRIPTION OR USE CHAT GPT TO REPHRASE WHAT IS WRITTEN IN THE JOB DESCRIPTION. Yes, people actually do this. 🤦🏽♀️ If you see a position that you really want, take the time to write a thoughtful, compelling cover letter. Personalization and authenticity go a long way. We are here to help our client find the absolute best candidate for the role. Is that you? Or someone you know? Learn more, share, and/or apply! P.S. 1wI applied to this position, with 20 years of experience under my belt, along with a Masters degree in Environmental Law and Policy with my thesis being in Conservation of Biological Diversity, a BA in Communication Management, and 15 years of professional and personal experience working and living in Alaska. Your company sent me a rejection notice that I was not selected for an interview on the morning of Christmas Eve. From a senior management perspective, that decision and the communication plan to notify me of this on Christmas seems exceptionally careless. I think you all could probably do better next time. Not sure why you allowed a boilerplate rejection email to spice up my inbox on Christmas Eve, but it would be good policy to interweave more humanity into your decision making process and communication plan with applicants in the future.
