We were thrilled to be a part of the Association of Fundraising Professionals Greater Polk County Chapter National Philanthropy Day celebration last week! National Philanthropy Day is a national awards program hosted by AFP chapters across the United States. This special event is dedicated to celebrating the time, talents, and contributions of individuals and corporations in our community. We nominated Tim Rice, President/Owner of Ward's Air Conditioning, for Philanthropic Individual of the Year, and Allen & Company, for Philanthropic Corporation of the Year. Tim's support has been steadfast and constant through the years. Tim serves on BSP's Board of Directors and the Carol Jenkins Barnett Endowment Committee and is passionate about providing equal access to this safe and welcoming community asset for all in Central Florida. Allen & Company's involvement since the inception of BSP propelled us to new heights during the Capital Campaign and they enabled us to gain additional support from major organizations. The Allen & Company Family Lawn, centrally located in the heart of the Park, serves as a gathering space for wellness classes, family picnics, cultural events and concerts, and so much more; ultimately promoting community and togetherness for all to enjoy. We are so grateful for Tim Rice, Allen & Company, and all of our major supporters who embody the spirit of philanthropy and continue to advocate for us.

The Future of Philanthropy is Young! Jeremiah Steen once told me that this is the best world to take risks, to test out new hypotheses for the world's potential, and give that first push to someone's career. How can we do any less than to fully empower young people in every asset of this field? For Elders in the Non-Profit Sector, how are you held accountable by those under 25 within the communities you serve? Are we on your boards? Have we reviewed and approved of the language you use to describe us in your grants? Most importantly, what are you doing to build the trust required to build a world that will honor your legacy?

The Steen Foundation proudly nominated Jelani Stowers, VP of Narrative & Research, who, while accepting his award, announced a commitment to provide a $1,000 cash prize indefinitely for the winner of the AFP Greater Detroit Chapter’s Sparky Anderson Youth in Philanthropy Award, at the National Philanthropy Day Awards Ceremony and Strolling Dinner 2024.

Nonprofits are at the heart of Greater Boston and the heart of our work. That's why TBF's Community Leadership pathway is grounded in supporting nonprofit leaders and organizations, strengthening relationships and equitable philanthropic practices, valuing collaboration, and investing in community-led grantmaking that aids individuals and families. In our work with infrastructure partners like the Institute for Nonprofit Practice, TBF strives to empower and equip nonprofit leaders so they can meet their missions and strengthen our communities. As many consider supporting nonprofits throughout the giving season and beyond, it is essential that we center the wellbeing of our nonprofit sector as a whole. You by our side. Equity at the center. Thanks to the Institute for Nonprofit Practice and all of the nonprofit leaders who partnered with us for this video series, and our gratitude to EmVision Productions for showcasing this work! Elaine Chu, embodies the values that we espouse at 21/64: integrity, justice, relationships, and innovation. Throughout her career, she has learned to seamlessly blend SELF and ROLE, to the great benefit of the families and institutions she serves. Based in Seattle, WA, Elaine is a vice president of Philanthropic Strategies for Fidelity Charitable®. Since 2022, she has led a team of philanthropic strategists in the Private Donor Group that advises Fidelity Charitable’s most generous donors on how they can use their charitable resources to meaningfully advance the causes they care about. Earlier in her career, Elaine was Director of Philanthropic Services at the Seattle Foundation. Currently, she is a board member for Green River College, a public community college focused on global workforce development and civic engagement. This month, Elaine will be named the Wonderful Woman of Color with the Women of Color in Fundraising and Philanthropy (WOC)® to kick off Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month. Thank you, Elaine, for bringing your authentic self to the 21/64 Learning Community and for enriching all of us with your ideas and the example you set. IN A FEW SENTENCES, WHAT IS YOUR PURPOSE IN LIFE? To make this world a better place for the next generation, personally and professionally. My favorite quote on this is “we don’t inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.” I use this as my north star to change the narrative that we lead with selflessness. I want to continue to encourage children, young adults, and parents through engagement and tools they can use to become champions for causes and communities they care deeply about. WHAT IS THE BEST PART OF YOUR WORK? I get to build relationships and meet wonderful families who lead with empathy, kindness, and humbleness. They are intentional and thoughtful in their approaches to giving. I find joy in working with families to connect the dots and advise them in their planning to maximize their impact to nonprofits and communities. WHAT IS A BURNING QUESTION YOU HAVE FOR THIS COMMUNITY? What does success look like to you when working with families in philanthropy? I know we tend to immediately gravitate to the quantitative side when we think about success and impact, but our work goes beyond that as we build trust and relationships. WHAT WAS THE LAST SHOW YOU BINGED-WATCHED? Ted Lasso! The show reminded me a lot about teamwork, relationships, friendships, and how it takes a community to work together.
