Our recent paper, co-authored with my PhD advisor, Prof. Babak Heydari, explores the often-overlooked aspect of decentralized, bottom-up recovery processes in sociotechnical systems. Complex systems are susceptible to a variety of disturbances, from natural disasters to political upheavals and pandemic crises. We propose an innovative framework that simulates network-based disruptions and models bottom-up recoveries. It captures individual agents' strategic behaviors, recognizing their inherent need to access resources such as information and basic necessities during disruptions, leading to various system equilibria and the evolving trajectories of each. While our method focuses on decentralized recovery, it enables a clear measurement of centralized intervention opportunities as shown in the figure. This allows us to nudge the agents toward higher system-level performance states while maintaining the autonomous decision-making of each agent. This work sets the stage for more effective system resilience analysis (and maybe more realistic compared to entirely top-down engineered models!). Supported by a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) INCITE Award, Professor Chris Wolverton will collaborate with Argonne National Laboratory to perform high-throughput calculations of thousands of materials properties at finite temperature. The project will leverage Wolverton's Open Quantum Materials Database, which supports new materials design by identifying candidate materials for applications like alternative energies and sustainability. https://lnkd.in/gXxkZPEx

RECENT NEWS The Royal Society of Queensland Fracking coal seams and its potential to trigger seismic events The first paper in its series of Occasional Papers has now been published online in #preprint form. (https://lnkd.in/gXmznsk7 ) As explained on the landing page for Occasional Papers, establishment of this line of documents was approved by the Council of the Society to accommodate papers that are too long for its annual journal, or in some other way are not in a suitable format. At nearly 20,000 words, a review paper called Coal Seam Gas Mining: Potential to Induce Seismic and Aseismic Events and Aquifer Discontinuity is twice as long as the word limit indicated for articles for its annual Proceedings. The paper reviews local and international experience in the propensity of fracking coal seam gas seams to trigger seismic events, with a tangible risk of earthquakes. The paper notes the loss of seismographic recording capacity in the University of Queensland and the lack of interest by the Queensland Government in knowing how serious is this risk. The paper has been subject to peer review and has been revised accordingly. It is published in pre-print form to allow feedback from people with expertise and lived knowledge of the coal seam gas industry. It is yet to be finally copyedited, formatted and proofread, but is considered to be scientifically authoritative.
