Balfour Beatty VINCI has hit the 50% completion mark on the 700-metre-long Burton Green Tunnel in Warwickshire, a structure that sets itself apart due to its unique green characteristics. 🛤️ The tunnel, designed with the community in mind, will feature a green space above, blending seamlessly with the local landscape.🌳 It’s one of five ‘green tunnels’ on the HS2 (High Speed Two) Ltd route, designed to allow trains to pass through while minimising environmental impact. 💭 It's day 4 of #ScotAppWeek24 and today we are looking at the impact work taster events can have on capturing the imagination of students and young professionals by showcasing that the construction industry can provide a fun, dynamic, innovative and rewarding career for them.   👏🏻 A recent example of this saw more than 200 young adults from across Scotland attended a two-day work taster event. Organised by SCAPE Scotland, its delivery partners and some of the UK’s leading construction and consultant companies, the ‘SCAPEing Out a World of Work Tasters’ event provided students with a hand-on experience of the industry.   👷🏾♂️ The event proved a great success with 74% of students now likely to consider a career in construction as well as an increase in knowledge on the various jobs and pathways available. What has also been encouraging to see, is the impact the event has continued to have in the days and months that followed with numerous school and site visits and career opportunities arranged as a direct result. 🙏🏽 Finally, only by true collaboration can the inherent challenges that exist within the construction industry be identified and challenged. This event proved just this, with SCAPE's delivery partners joining with some of the UK’s most influential construction and consultant firms, for the greater good. My heart is overwhelmed with gratitude today. After sharing my vulnerable moment with you all yesterday, I've been touched beyond words by your outpouring of support, messages, and shared stories. Each of your responses has been like a light in the darkness, reminding me why this fight for change in Australian construction matters so deeply. Your messages - from seasoned construction veterans to young apprentices just starting their journey - have filled my cup with renewed courage and determination. And to every person who simply said "keep going" - you've no idea how powerful those two words can be on the hardest days. The truth is, advocating for culture change in construction isn't just about policies or programs anymore. Through your responses, you've reminded me that it's about every individual who deserves to feel safe, valued, and respected at work. Yes, some days will still be challenging. The opposition won't disappear overnight. But your solidarity has shown me that I'm not alone in this fight - we're a growing community of people who believe in a better future for Australian construction. I am not giving up anytime soon, I'll continue this work. Not because I'm the strongest or the bravest, but because your support has turned my moment of vulnerability into a fountain of strength. After what feels like a very long winter, Spring is finally here. Lighter days, warmer weather and the sound of bird songs has made us look back fondly at a Marina project in the most stunning setting – the banks of the Hamble Estuary. Nesting birds within an estuary means that there is a very limited window of opportunity for a project to be built, and for Hamble Yacht Services, Environmental Officers and the Local Authority were keen that the process should be a short as possible and at just the right time. Modulek Operations Director Brian Pester talks about how modular construction can provide a solution to these very short windows of opportunity and Director at Hamble Yacht Services Tim Yetman explains how this enabled the build to go ahead on such an environmentally sensitive site. As always, we need a combination of well-designed infrastructure and soft interventions to enable change. And in this case, for the many men working in transport, planning and architecture to champion female-inclusive design too. The time for it just to be women talking to women about this stuff has to be over. (Particularly useful are pages 18-23 - an overview of the thoughts and factors affecting different females' use (or not) of transport and public spaces; and pages 76-103 - a design menu of the elements which can be combined together to create useful, safe and welcoming spaces for women and girls.)
