Not everyone enjoys the work Christmas party—and that’s okay! As the festive season rolls around, the office Christmas party is often seen as the way to celebrate. But have you ever considered that not everyone feels the same way about these events? For some, the traditional party feels less like a celebration and more like a chore. THOUGHTFUL THURSDAY #7 💭 Yesterday, Agena Bioscience held its San Diego office holiday celebration, and it got me reflecting on the value of these yearly traditions. I didn’t always get to attend holiday parties. When I worked as a field service engineer, I was often too far from HQ to join. But since transitioning to an in-office role, I’ve developed a deeper appreciation for the effort and purpose behind these celebrations. Here are my top reasons for valuing a yearly holiday party: 1️⃣ A chance for leaders to connect with employees: For many, this might be the only time they get to chat with the GM or CEO in a relaxed setting. It’s a great way for leadership to show their appreciation. 2️⃣ Breaking down silos: Holiday parties encourage cross-department connections. You might meet someone new or gain valuable insights about challenges and successes from another team’s perspective. 3️⃣ A well-deserved break: End-of-year deadlines can be stressful. A fun, inclusive event gives employees a chance to unplug, recharge, and boost mental well-being before diving back in. Holiday parties may seem simple, but they play an important role in fostering connection, appreciation, and balance at work. P.S. Thanks David Evans, MBA and Shanon Nguyen for being my partners in crime. #ThoughtfulThursday #HappyHolidays #WorkplaceCulture

From booking venues and coordinating RSVPs to balancing budgets and curating the perfect theme, it can feel like a logistical marathon. And let’s not forget about the pressure to make everyone happy—after all, it’s an event that should be both professional and festive! But here’s the thing: Despite the stress, the effort is always worth it. 🎁 Seeing colleagues laughing, bonding, and letting loose outside of their work roles reminds us why we do what we do. Those shared moments of joy build stronger teams, create lasting memories, and foster a positive company culture. So if you’re in the midst of holiday party planning this year, take a deep breath and remember—it’s all about creating moments of connection and appreciation. Your efforts may feel like a whirlwind, but the rewards are priceless. 🙌 #OfficeHolidayParty #EventPlanning #CompanyCulture #HolidaySeason #TeamBuilding #Gratitude

Most people expect to receive some sort of gift of appreciation at work during the holidays. In the last week, I’ve attended two professional holiday parties where people won prizes, delicious food was served, and entertainment was enjoyed. Christmas is the traditional time to plan events like this for the people we work with. How can we recreate this magic and appreciation at other times of the year, not just around Christmas? I’ve seen organizations do all sorts of incentives throughout the year to show appreciation for their people to make them feel seen as humans, rather than just a number. These activities also increase their employee retention. Trips, contests, scotch tape races, you name it. 🤣 Holiday parties are so fun, don’t get me wrong. It’s also the time when people expect it. What happens when you reward your people when they aren’t expecting it? Lots of good things. Improved mental health, job satisfaction, and productivity at work. Just to name a few. If our entire energy and budget goes towards one party a year, perhaps there are ways we can adjust to make people feel seen the rest of the year too, when they are less likely to expect it. There something special about the element of surprise appreciation. Plus, scotch tape races down the hall are pretty cheap and so fun. What do you do to make others feel seen & appreciated when they’re not expecting it? #julielee #iseeyouleadership #theconnectedleader
