Registration for the Science to Policy Summit closes next Friday, May 10! The Summit will take place at Lacamas Lake Lodge on Wednesday, May 15, on the topic of "Conservation as climate mitigation: Using carbon programs to protect and restore ecosystems." Virtual attendance is also available. Carbon programs create financial incentives to reduce emissions and have the potential to be integrated into a variety of conservation and restoration programs. At the Science to Policy Summit 2024, carbon program business leaders, resource managers, researchers, and restoration practitioners will share the latest research on carbon sequestration, how carbon programs are currently operating, and how they are evolving to meet new restoration and conservation initiatives. Register: https://lnkd.in/gDpEN8z6 We're also offering FREE lunchtime paddles on the Estuary Partnership's two Big Canoes with members of our Education Team. The Estuary Partnership initiated the Science to Policy Summit series in 2007 to expand the dialog among scientists, natural resource professionals and community leaders within the region. This will be the first recurrence of the Summit since 2019.

To mark World Environment Day, Cambridge Zero spoke to Dr Charlotte Wheeler, Konstantis Alexopoulos, and Joycelyn Longdon about their research work to restore landscapes, boost biodiversity, and collaborate with communities to mitigate and adapt to climate change 🌿🌎 🌳 "If we get this right, we have a huge potential opportunity to bring back forests," said Dr Charlotte Wheeler, PhD, who uses satellite data and innovative technologies like LiDAR to assess tropical forest regrowth and carbon sequestration in Brazil's rainforests. 🏔 "The mountain’s ability to act as 'climate regulators', moderating temperatures and protecting from drought is being compromised," said Konstantis Alexopoulos, who researches melting snow levels in the mountains of Greece, impacting water supplies for local communities. 🔬 "We must take a different route – one where justice is built into the technologies that we use to protect nature," said Joycelyn Longdon, who researches bioacoustics for monitoring forest restoration while empowering indigenous ecological knowledge. Her justice-driven approach challenges conservation norms. 🌾 World Environment Day is a United Nations initiative to encourage worldwide climate awareness and action. This year’s focus is on #LandRestoration 🔗 Discover more about the work of our climate researchers at https://lnkd.in/d-P7pnwW #WorldEnvironmentDay #WED2024 #ClimateChange #CambridgeUniversity #CambridgeUni #Cambridge #UniversityOfCambridge #CambridgeZero

Expanding on the efforts spearheaded by the Global Ocean Decade Programme for Blue Carbon (GO-BC) led by University of St Andrews, two new #OceanDecade Actions will contribute to enhancing our understanding of blue carbon and its potential benefits to help tackle climate change: 🔵 JPI Oceans is working towards creating a European Regional Hub for Blue Carbon, a diverse network to foster the exchange of blue carbon knowledge and best practices. 🔵 Conservation International aims to make environmental DNA (eDNA) more accessible for blue carbon research, which will enable this cutting-edge scientific technique to achieve its revolutionary potential. 👉 https://lnkd.in/e6-d-mjf

🌱It’s World Environment Day! This year, the UN Environment Programme has developed a practical guide designed to help get everyone involved in ecosystem restoration and outlining the many ways we can all join forces to give nature a helping hand by acting today, making smart choices and raising our voice for restoration: https://lnkd.in/duCHperf One of the solutions suggested in the chapter dedicated to marine and coastal areas is to involve local communities in conservation efforts through education and outreach programs to bolster restoration initiatives. 🎯SCORE Coastal City Living Labs (CCLLs) involve citizens, scientists, policy makers and other local stakeholders to address climate change adaptation and resilience issues through Ecosystem-Based Approaches (EBAs) and smart technologies. 👉 Watch our video to know more: https://lnkd.in/eFxK5k-v #WorldEnvironmentDay #GenerationRestoration #CoastalCities #ClimateChange #ClimateResilience

Your friendly reminder that the abstract submission deadline for AGU 2024 Fall Meeting is due tomorrow (July 31st). If you're focused on advancing MRV methods for scaling nature-based solutions, consider submitting an abstract to our session called 🛰 Scaling Nature-Based Climate Solutions 🛰 , co-convened by Carlos E. Silva, @Viola Heinrich, Xueyuan Gao, and myself. ➡ https://lnkd.in/eeEVWaVQ Abstract: Nature-based climate solutions (NbS), such as forest conservation and restoration, offer a promising approach to mitigate the effects of global climate change, conserve biodiversity, and enhance rural livelihoods. By either reducing emissions or by sequestering extra carbon in terrestrial ecosystems, forest conservation and restoration can yield substantial co-benefits for biodiversity and ecosystem services and is often a no-regret investment. However, the effectiveness of NbS may be undermined by the “additionality”, “leakage” and “impermanence” issues, unless properly addressed. Recent concerns about the integrity of forest carbon projects caused their share of the voluntary market to decline from 40% in 2021 to 30% in 2022. This session focuses on advances in carbon credit quantification methods, and empirical characterization of co-benefits, to improve the credibility of NbS. We invite submissions on: (1) advances in MRV of NbS using remote sensing and in-situ observations. (2) advances in projections of carbon sequestration potential of NbS
