This initiative aims to safeguard Scotland’s marine ecosystems from the destructive impact of bottom trawling, which threatens vital marine life and habitats. 📅 Have your say! From the seaside towns of Maine to the coral sand beaches of Hawai’i, millions of people will visit the coast this year to enjoy sunshine, seabreezes, and a bounty of recreational activities. ☀️🌴 Federal funding for the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is essential to protecting our nation’s beloved ocean, coasts, and Great Lakes. The agency carries out critical programs to conserve marine habitat, protect wildlife, and steward coastal resources. 🐋🌊 Unfortunately, many NOAA programs are chronically underfunded, making our coasts more vulnerable to the impacts of development, pollution, and climate change. Even after all this time, we still have less than half of English (and Northern Irish offshore) MPA features in favourable condition. Progress is still too slow, we still lack effective management in many sites, and what management there is is tied to where MPA features are, rather then where they could be if recovered. Banning bottom trawling across these safe havens is the first place to start. Govt should release its long-awaited proposals for managing fisheries in its offshore seabed MPAs without delay, or risk being overtaken by other countries in delivering its 30x30 commitment in practice.

🚨 BREAKING: Only 44% of key species and habitats within UK marine protected areas are in favourable condition. Not good enough! It's time to get a move on and properly protect ocean havens if we're to have any hope of reaching the 70% target by 2042. We can start by kicking dirty Big Oil and bottom trawlers out of protected waters. “Rainforests of the sea,” otherwise known as coral reefs, support a quarter of all marine species, and are the cornerstone of healthy ocean ecosystems. 🪸 And while record heat, ocean acidification, pollution, and unsustainable fishing practices are threatening their survival, there is hope thanks to the United Nations High Seas Treaty, which provides tools to create marine protected areas that will help safeguard these reefs. #WorldOceansDay
