Happy #MayDay! Today is the day that the United States celebrates the #Spring season, as it falls between the March equinox and the June solstice. Around the world, it's also recognized as a day of unity and rebirth, and is often celebrated with dancing, singing, traditional May flowers and ribbons, and maypoles. This became central to a Middle Age tradition in many English villages, with many villagers competing to see whose maypole was the tallest, and incorporating them into dances and decorations. Traditionally, these would also include basket weaving, flower crowns, and homemade sweets that were gifted amongst the community. However, May Day also became observed for an entirely different reason. It also represents #InternationalWorkersDay, where the International Labor Movement celebrates the working class in response to the May 1, 1886 strike demanding for an 8-hour work day. Regardless of how you choose to recognize today, there is one thing that we can all agree on: it's almost Spring! #plumbing #smallbusinessbigdreams #hajekheatingandplumbing #hvac #airconditioner #familyrunbusiness #pdx #willamettevalley #themoreyouknow

Friday Phrase 63 Every week, I’m indulging my love of language and investigating the weird and wonderful phrases English has to offer. This week “a dogsbody” 🐕 This one means someone who is there to do all the menial jobs. Sources suggest we have the Royal Navy to thank for this one… In the 19th century, catering at sea certainly wouldn’t have earned any Michelin stars. One particularly odious dish was dried peas, wrapped in a cloth and boiled. The sailors began to refer to this as “dogsbody”. We’re not quite sure why, though some people suggest it’s because it looked like something you’d feed a dog, while others think it might have been in reference to the shape of the cloth bundle. 🥣 Over the years, the term escaped the gally and came to mean a junior officer on board. Again, it’s not really clear why, though it’s fairly easy to see how the humblest dish on offer provided a convenient way of reminding those officers low down in the pecking order of exactly how low they were. The phrase slowly migrated out of the naval context and was being used more generally to refer to anyone doing the grunt work by the early 1900s. 🧹 I first heard it when I was around 11 when someone at a charity event introduced himself to me as a dogsbody. I’m not quite sure what happened in my brain but his team were very confused when I met them again a few weeks later and asked after “the dead dog”. Oops. P.S: Missed any of April’s phrases? 🌟 Finding Unity in Diversity: Reflections on Easter, Passover, and Ramadan 🌟As we approach the end of the season of celebrations, we are reminded of the beautiful parallels between Easter, Passover, and Ramadan. Despite the diversity of our traditions, these occasions serve as poignant reminders of the values that bind us together as a global community. Just as Easter celebrates renewal and rebirth, Passover commemorates liberation and freedom, and Ramadan fosters empathy and spiritual growth. In each of these observances, there lies a profound message of resilience, compassion, and solidarity. In a world often marked by division and discord, let us take inspiration from these shared principles. Let us embrace the spirit of inclusivity, understanding, and harmony that transcends cultural and religious boundaries. As we gather with loved ones to break bread, share stories, and offer prayers, may we recognize the common humanity that unites us all. May these moments of reflection and connection remind us of the importance of coming together, even in the face of differences. I believe in fostering a culture of unity and respect. Let's celebrate our diversity and embrace the richness it brings to our lives and communities. Wishing you and your loved ones a joyous celebration filled with peace, love, and unity.

Max maintaining his overwatch of the pack even in the car... Max is my service dog but more importantly he is an ambassador to show others the benefits of having and working with a service dog. He often will trigger on someone next to me or in the same room. He is trained to put his head on my lap when I'm stressed sitting down or lean against me if I'm standing. He grounds me instantly when I look down and see him looking up at me asking if I'm ok. If you see Max and I out and about and he walks over to I already know how your day is going...just enjoy him as I do and soak up his love. Basic rules for engaging with someone with a Service Dog: (Max and I are an exception) 1)Try not to bring additional attention to the handler or dog. 2)Engage the handler, not the dog. 3)Do not ask why the handler has a service dog.

Recently, Nicola Rothmann and I facilitated Global Creatures global conference at the Taronga Zoo. Global Creatures is a spectacular (like literally) theatre production company. You'll know them for the stage productions of Moulin Rouge, Strictly Ballroom, King Kong, How to Train Your Dragon to name a few. There are so many fabulous things to celebrate from this day; 1. The generosity of their Founder and leader Carmen Pavlovic. Flying people from around the world, putting them up in an incredible venue and then taking them out onto the harbour is an act of complete love and gratitude. 2. Asking everyone to contribute to their values and behaviours and owning them together - is how you create something magical. 3. How you are treated with kindness and open arms by everyone from Judy Fuccilli who leads people and culture to Julie N. who makes sure everything happens on time and perfectly. I can't name everyone as it will take up this feed but you are pure delights. And one of my absolute happy moments was chatting to the meerkats. I love this lil’ critter. Especially when they are from the most cohesive tribe in all the mammal kingdom. So much to learn about how they make it work. Being curious (what if that was our default when opposition comes our way), having an immunity when they get bitten (what if we didn't take people personally) and getting the job done (no one calling the unions when asked to do something not on their position description). If only we made it so simple. Thanks Global Creatures. One of my fav experiences. #workplaceculture #feedbackculture #peopleandculture #meerkats
