A profound moment over a Zoom call. It got me thinking. This device in your hand allows you to tune into a particular frequency to speak to your loved ones. Call it your phone number. Likewise, we all have a core frequency. When we represent our true selves, our signal is the strongest. Like a phone call, my signal was strong. I wasn't aware that someone picked up the signal. Mark was the one on the other side. Our operator connected us, Tara. How the signal is connected isn’t our concern. Allow that to take shape freely. We jumped on a Zoom call. All founding teams and their wider teams should remember this picture. When you’re building a brand new business - every small thing matters. It’s your reputation, perceived value, the market’s assessment of what you’re able to deliver, the excitement of how greatly you may succeed or the fear of how badly you will fail. It’s expected that every small moment is taken personally, as though your entire future is banking on it and everyone’s hard work and sacrifice is at risk. The smallest disagreement with partners or among your teams, the smallest challenge in an environment, the smallest passing comment, the smallest change in direction, the smallest deadline, the smallest deal, the smallest client, the smallest delay, the smallest failure, the smallest mistake internally - are all huge in the moment.. But it too shall pass. What I’ve learnt is to intentionally focus on fixing any problem first and figuring out what went wrong, later. We learnt it as a “post mortem”. It helps with perspective and teaches me to immediately shift my brain onto the facts and worry less about emotions. It sounds obvious, but in reality, it’s not always simple- cause we’re all human and startups are indeed emotionally, physically and psychologically challenging. I’m sure we all agree to keep a rolling pipeline cause we just don’t know when a deal will fall through - the same applies to problems. It’s a rolling pipeline. When one is sorted another pops up. Solve the issues as they come and kill the dramatic reactions. They’ll start looking less like the first circle and more like the last. PMF, funding, sales, revenue, expansion, exits are not certain for all startups. But one thing is - nothing goes the exactly the way we plan. These reminders are important.
