🎥 A standing ovation for HBO! 👏 Their behind-the-scenes featurette on "The Penguin" isn’t just a deep dive into the creation of the show, it’s a groundbreaking moment for our industry. For once, proper credit is given to every single department involved, with VFX finally receiving the spotlight it has long deserved. Seeing the meticulous craft behind the scenes, from the technical intentionality of the VFX to the collaborative synergy with practical effects, scenography, and costume design, was truly inspiring. It was fascinating to witness how months of hard work and expertise converge to achieve visual storytelling of the highest calibre. This is more than just a nod to innovation; it’s a hopeful glimpse into a future where the unsung heroes of production, artists, designers, and technicians, receive the acknowledgement they deserve. I hope this sets a new standard for productions worldwide: to praise and celebrate the artistry, ingenuity, and dedication that bring their visions to life, instead of hiding them behind the curtain. 🎯 Are you passionate about visual storytelling, eager to elevate your craft, or curious about the future of VFX in storytelling? Try out this easy transitions in your next edit.
A common mistake I see a lot of beginner editors making is relying on fancy transitions to move from scene to scene. Some of the best transitions, however, are as simple as a sound bridge. I talk about this in today's video :)

Just had to chime in on this. Tom Brevoort, Marvel Comics’ Executive Editor, has fallen into the same trap that many of the industry’s creators have: clapping back at fans. His latest tiff with readers regards innumerable comments made about the forthcoming X-Men ’97 show, the much-anticipated follow-up to the X-Men Animated series that debuted in 1992. I won’t bother getting into the whole ‘woke’ debate as that’s not the issue I’m trying to address here. Rather, it’s Brevoort and his ilk (Mark Waid, Tom King, Donny Cates just to name a few), who rant and rave at fans, dismissing their opinions, and even insulting them. Maybe they have a point. But that isn’t THE point. Because the fans and readers do have a voice. And when they’re displeased, it’s the comic book publishers and creators who need to listen and react proactively and positively instead of name-calling and finger-pointing. And let’s be honest…if readers didn’t have a leg to stand on, Marvel, DC and so many other publishers wouldn’t be having their lunch eaten by manga. I’ve been reading books since I was six. In my opinion, the quality of art, and especially the level of storytelling is, by and large, well...it ain't good. Where before creators were passionate about what they did, many of today’s incarnations seem hellbent on using these beloved properties as sounding boards for their personal agendas and POVs. This isn’t anything new. But these views didn’t drive stories in the past. They enhanced them, allowing the narrative and characters to remain where they should be, which is front and center. So, until the Western companies decide that their readerships matter, we’ll keep talking about the same things…poor sales, disillusioned fans, spiteful, disrespectful creators, yadda, yadda, yadda. I truly hope this changes, and we can get back to the fun and wonder that comics are supposed to bring. Until then…I’m off to read the next volume of One Punch Man. 'Nuff said! #marvelcomics #dccomics #manga #respect #storytelling #fansmatter

Continuing Series on F**K the Hero's Journey! Slides #37: Wavelette—Not Your Average Climax Who said your story needs one big climax? Let’s talk about Wavelette structures. 🌊 • Think Atlanta, Fleabag, or The Square. These stories break away from the traditional arc, delivering mini-climaxes that ripple with meaning. Also please read/see the work of UK playwright Carol Churchill... a pioneer in this structure. • Imagine creating stories where characters weave in and out, or even disappear for 40% of the show—and it still works! • In real life, emotions ebb and flow—shouldn’t your stories do the same? Let’s move beyond the narrative mountain!
