During this episode, CDR Paul Grostad discusses the emerging threat of cognitive warfare, emphasizing the importance of information in modern societies and the potential for it to be weaponized. NATO’s recent ideas about warfighting across multiple domains (MDO) are everywhere in today's defence discussions, but what scientific and ‘folksy’ logics underpin them?   In my latest co-authored article with Anders Klitmøller, we show how #NATO MDO policy proceeds on rhetoric and features of complexity thinking, effectively transforming it into a plausible ‘folk theory.’ The policy captures attention with its convincing and intuitive appeal, suggesting novel approaches to warfare in an increasingly uncertain and interconnected world.   However, as we argue, MDO extends beyond strategic innovation. It brings strong normative implications for how warfare is organized and envisioned, despite its shaky empirical and conceptual grounding. This can lead to an ideological influence within the defence and security sectors, shaping how the future is constructed within these fields and impacting how conflicts are envisioned and executed.
