Do you use checklists in business? At the start of my flight training, I didn’t fully appreciate the importance of checklists — I thought I could rely on intuition, similar to driving a car. But as this video shows, forgetting just one step, like lowering the landing gear, can have serious consequences. In business, checklists are just as critical. They help us navigate complex tasks, minimize risks, and ensure we achieve our goals safely — whether it's a successful project or a smooth landing. #BusinessChecklists #RiskManagement #AttentionToDetail #SuccessfulExecution #LearnFromAviation
Start, takeoff, landing, shutdown (and others, depending on your aircraft) all have purposes and despite the joy of flying, these are life and death checklists. When you look at air accidents/incidents, it's never something singly catastrophic, it's usually two or three small things that combine with a human imperfection to produce a bad result. That's why checklists are the way to go. On a project I often have checklists but in day to day business I often don't--this is a good reminder to evaluate places to use them. Thanks, Bjorn.
Should lowering landing gears be a memory item for the pilots during landing process? 😑
👍 And by failing to adhere to processes, tasks and task qualities, or relying unilaterally on intuition and routine, German companies lose around 25% per month and employee: 25% of working time or EUR 114 billion in additional costs each year.
I believe that in complex situations checklists are a must have thing. I see that they bring at least two valuable benefits in business. First is that by having checklist, it is easier to track how business is going on. Projects are most common user case for checklists but other areas work well too. Secondly, I see checklist as an important quality management tool. People have tendency to look for shortcuts - especially when they are stressed, so by having them to go trough a checklist reduces the quality risks in complex processes.
Having started using flight check-lists at the Força Aérea Portuguesa | Portuguese Air Force when I was 18, I kept creating and using them for a lot of stuff: for family holidays travelling, swimming pool operations, etc. 😎

Several companies would improve their profit and quality if they used checklists for recurring moments, good advice! If not using checklists, at least try to write important things down on paper or save your notes digitally to avoid future problems.
Checklists are important in routine activities and especially critical activities when unforseen circumstances, high stress or emergencies would otherwise make you forget something important. Checklists also reduce stress by confirming you completed everything required. But it still remains important to have the checklist available and follow the correct checklist.
Some checks are more important than others.

2moWhen I was the production manger at a wood component production facility I created a foldable check list for machinery operators to do all the required things expected of them setting up, starting off and ending a run of components. It was entirely based off of a flying club checklist I had grabbed when I was a teen flying with my brother in law. Less errors were made and changeover from one profile to the next was smoother. It was looked at like a pit stop in racing. Get the machine back on the track but don't forget to tighten and check the wheel nuts.
