Did you know that Oregon currently has more nurses than we’ve ever had in the history of the state? It’s true. As of 2023, Oregon had 75,188 people licensed to practice nursing. Compare that to five years ago, when Oregon had 55,316 people licensed to practice nursing. Oregon’s nursing workforce grew 11 percent year over year from 2020 to 2022, while the population of the state grew less than 0.5 percent during the same period. However, the increased number of nurses aren’t filling all the open positions, and there are still reports of significant staff shortages. In fact, the Oregon Employment Department recently reported approximately 1,500 open nursing positions across the state. We’ve reached a strange conundrum in our state: We have a high supply of nurses along with a high demand for services. So, with all the nurses in Oregon, do we still have a nursing shortage? Over the next few weeks, I’m going to be posting some ideas, research, and conversations that we’ve been having at the Oregon Center For Nursing throughout the past several years. I’d love to hear your thoughts and know what you think about what we’re working on. #nursingshortage #VacancyCrisis #oregon #healthcare

I’m excited to share that I attended my first board meeting for the Oregon Center For Nursing last week. We had some insightful discussions on several critical issues affecting our profession: • Nursing Workforce and Turnover Rate: Addressing the high turnover rate in our field. • New Staffing Law: Understanding when it will go into effect and how organizations will be held in compliance. • Need for More Nursing Faculty: Highlighting the urgent need for more educators in nursing. • Lack of Nurses in Rural Areas: Exploring solutions to address the shortage of nurses in rural communities. • Transitioning into Practice: Discussing ways to support new nurses as they transition into their roles. • Improving Nurse Retention: Strategies to prevent bullying and foster a positive culture, especially for our new nurses. If you haven’t checked it out already, take a look at the RN Well-Being Project on the OCN website. OCN is dedicated to finding ways for employers to better support nurses: RN Well-Being Project - Oregon Center for Nursing. I’m looking forward to contributing to these important initiatives and making a positive impact in the nursing community. #Nursing #Healthcare #NurseLeadership #OCN #NurseRetention #PositiveWorkCulture

Sharing and building on this post shared with me on the out of box thinking Arizona is taking to address the worsening nursing shortage there: 👏 Thank you, Tom Lawry, for consistently championing the cause of nurses and for shedding light on Arizona’s initiatives. The nursing community is in dire need of leaders who acknowledge our worth and understand the exhaustive nature of our profession, both physically and emotionally. Until we can foster a supportive model that addresses the root causes of clinician burnout, the nursing shortage will persist. It’s crucial that we shift our focus towards attracting the younger generation to join this amazing and compassionate profession. I believe there are specific use cases for AI and tech that can help... 💭 In a world where many young people are growing up with a ‘self-focused’ mindset 🥇 , fueled by the allure of quick wealth 💸 through social media influencing and side hustles on platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok 📱 , we face an ever-widening gap. We need individuals who possess the resilience and determination to care for others during their most vulnerable and unglamorous moments 🤕 . ❓ The question we must ask ourselves is, how do we inspire our younger generations to don the scrubs day after day 👩⚕️ ? How do we make them understand the value of this profession ✨ that may offer lower pay compared to other healthcare professionals, demands long hours, and presents daily challenges that only those on the frontlines can truly comprehend 💔 ? A step in the right direction could be the utilization of AI technology 👩💻 . By focusing on reducing nursing tasks, redundancy, and documentation burdens, AI can help streamline our workflows. Moreover, AI can assist in overhauling revenue models, shifting the perception of nurses from being a cost to becoming a revenue stream 💰 #TheComissionforNursingReimbursement. Lastly, we need to attract the talented minds of nurses who are natural-born ‘MacGyvers’ and innovators, and let them loose in the discovery and development of new technologies. Nursing informaticists are often brought in too late, with frontline staff not being involved until the plans are set and they are talking implementation. 🤔 Perhaps if nurses and nurse informaticists were spending portions of their time ideating and developing to improve their own workflows, they may feel more fulfillment and satisfaction in their careers 🙌 #NursingInformatics #aifornurses #nursesonlinkedin HIMSS New York State Chapter SONSIEL - Society of Nurse Scientists, Innovators, Entrepreneurs & Leaders ANIA NY Tri-State Chapter ANA-NY Romina Hipolito Elias, DNP, MSN, NEA-BC, NI-BC Elaine Arnesen, BSN, RN, OCN Kathleen McGrow, DNP, MS, RN, PMP, FHIMSS, FAAN Olga Kagan, PhD, RN, CIMI, FHIMSS MaryAnn Connor MSN, RN, NI-BC, CPHIMS, FAMIA, FHIMSS Cathy Menkiena, MBA, FACHE, NI-BC, FHIMSS Julie Luengas, DNP, RN, NI-BC, MBA, FHIMSS Rebecca Love RN, MSN, FIEL Erica Zippo, MS, RN, NI-BC, RNC-OB, C-EFM

I had the privilege of being in Phoenix on Friday for a gathering of Nursing Leaders from throughout Arizona. With Arizona projected to have largest nursing shortage in U.S. beginning next year, nursing leaders and legislators have created and funded a great collaborative to increase the placement of student nurses/new grads in clinical rotations, enhance preceptor training and other activities to proactively grow the next generation of nurses and leaders. AI will have a major impact on the future of work for all nurses. Great conversation on the importance of nurses being at the table to guide how AI plays out in nursing practices. Special thanks to Kathy Malloch, Kathy Scott and Dr Tim Porter-O'Grady , for leading this effort. This initiative known as ARS36-1803 Grant: Nurses for a Healthy Arizona is worth watching and replicating. #nursesforahealthyarizona #aiinnursing #futureofwork Kathleen McGrow, DNP, MS, RN, PMP, FHIMSS, FAAN Valerie Serwicki MSHI, BSN, RN Olga Kagan, PhD, RN, CIMI, FHIMSS Gil Bashe

LEADERSHIP IN NURSING In my 3 decades of clinical practice, I have worked wirh nurses at various level of their career....from student nurse to Director of Nursing. Nurses play a pivotol role in the healthcare system. They are the key frontliners in the clinical setting. Leadership among the nurses is essential for their self development ensuring patient care and guiding teams with expertise and compassion. Sone key leadership skills vital to nurses are 1)Effective Communication which starts with active listening. 2)Being empathetic. 3) Ability to resolve conflicts and 4)Adapating to the ever changing healthcare environment. As they gain clinical and leadership experience, they bloom to be Nurse Leaders whose role extends beyond the bedside, advocating for policy changes and systemic improvements. #nurseleadership #nurseleaders #leadershipinhealthcare #leadershipdevelopment

Thoughts on using students to "fill the nursing shortage" .... My thought is that this cheapens our work and instills the culture of placing the obligation of caring for patients soley on the nurses instead of the hospital system that has turned a blind eye to the problems driving nurses away from the bedside. Nursing students are there to LEARN and should not be considered an adjunct to a hospital's staffing plans. 2500 open nursing jobs in Mississippi... Maybe it is because they are the 3rd lowest paying state in the nation for nurses (64K annual average). https://lnkd.in/evw6sJ8G OR maybe it's because Mississippi doesn't require employers to offer breaks to workers? https://lnkd.in/e-NGWxCf OR maybe it's because Mississippi is the 2nd SICKEST state in the nation. https://lnkd.in/eJFUgvZx Instead of fixing the problems of being overworked and underpaid with no breaks, they are just using free labor at the expense of the nurse responsible for signing off on all those students. https://lnkd.in/eepSgA-M #nursesoflinkedin #nurses #nurseleaders

TRANSFORMING NURSING CULTURE: CREATING A POSITIVE AND SUPPORTIVE ENVIRONMENT In a recent LinkedIn poll, an astounding 86% of nearly 700 nurses said they left a position due to toxic nursing culture. Another 7% haven't left yet but would if they could. Just like a gardener tills the soil, adds fertilizer, and prepares the perfect environment for their heirloom seeds to thrive, we must do the same for our nursing stations. It's time to say NO to incivility, unprofessionalism, and bullying. These behaviors have no place in our profession. We must set different expectations and clean up our nursing culture from the roots. It's essential for the growth and well-being of both new and seasoned nurses. Let's pave the way for a more positive, supportive, and respectful environment where every nurse can flourish. Share your thoughts and experiences in the comments below. How can we work together to create a thriving nursing culture? 👇 #NursesRock #NurseLife #NursesFeedTheirYoung #DareToDoNursingDifferently #NursingLeadership
