It's not a new topic, but an important one to keep front and center. Female-founded biotechs received less than $6B out the nearly $30B biopharma VCs distributed last year - with wide ranging ramifications for the health and wellness of half of the global population. "Female-founded biotech and pharma companies got less than $6 billion out of the $29.9 billion that biopharma VCs doled out in 2023, according to PitchBook....Female investors at the partner level make up about 19% of the broader venture capital community. And we wonder why women's health as a category has been severely underinvested in to-date! And the numbers are still out of balance for Board Membership: "Companies with diverse boards have better outcomes and are more productive when women are involved, said Christiana Bardon, co-managing partner at investment firm MPM BioImpact. Gender-balanced boards 'are almost 20% more likely to have enhanced business outcomes,' per a report from the United Nations’ International Labour Organization." As an proud investor in a women-led biotech firm, I urge all Angels and VCs and Board Chairs in life sciences to pay attention to this massive gap. It is not a DEI issue. Thanks to Kyle LaHucik of Endpoints News, who always makes it a “point” to cover stories like these, and has strongly supported the #BiotechSisterhood since our inception. As a longtime CEO, serial entrepreneur, board member and former VC partner, I have firsthand experiences with the challenges of “leading while female”, especially a Latina female. I’m proud to be on the Executive Board of Biotechnology Innovation Organization, and vice chair of the BIO Emerging Companies Section, where we are working hard to make things better for small companies, where the vast majority of female and otherwise underrepresented CEOs reside.  We are giving voice, influence and community to emerging leaders, aiming to increase their success rate, and in the process, bring to market desperately needed innovative treatments for patients. More diverse investors who are the decision makers are needed to make this happen. Kyle is a steadfast and longtime champion of under-represented leaders in biotech, whether it be women, LGBTQIA+, people of color and others. “Somebody like myself, who has been in the industry now investing for about 20 years, if i’m not going to be focusing on bringing the next generation of women forward, then who will be? It really does have to be a deliberate effort.” Investors say more could be done to improve gender diversity in the life sciences investing sphere. VC firms and other investors help influence what disease areas and drug modalities get funded, what boardrooms look like and who leads companies. Groups like Women in Bio, Breaking 7% and Series 2X are looking to bring more women into investing, leadership posts and board roles. Investors say there are also discrepancies in who gets the money. “I’ve seen guys leave a big bulge bracket firm with a billion dollars of capital ready to go. They’re not that good and they blow themselves up. Over the last 7 years we’ve built Theolytics from concept to clinic. One key reflection - as long as we remain a minority in leadership roles, women championing other women in biotech can only go so far, so fast. It takes conscious effort from all of us to ‘level-up’. That’s:  💪 courageous founders starting-up 💸 active investment choices  ♀ Boards hiring and supporting female leadership 🔍 search firms going the extra mile to find and promote diverse talent 🚸 partners stepping up to share responsibilities at home, and  ⏩ radical change in company and government policies driving flexible work arrangements and access to childcare.
