So the #Yotta event in Las Vegas wrapped up yesterday and now back in Beverly, I decided to share a few of the things that I thought made the event worthwhile in terms of Workplace Elemental Technologies' time, resources and energy: 1. People. It always starts with people and there was a tremendous collection of Subject Matter Experts, Thought Leaders, Market Movers, Industry Consultants and yes, Outstanding Suppliers as well! Really enjoyed spreading the word about our ThinkLite Air Data Hall IAQ Solutions, and fully expect to see some exciting projects going forward. 2. Technology Event Leveraging....Technology. The #Yotta App had real two-way capabilities and allowed attendees to both express interest, but also chat with "connections". It also was the main pathway for the Event to push out information, reminders and Sponsor shoutouts (which I'm sure they appreciated). Impressive 3. Presentations....but with a Smart Interactive Twist. I really liked how there was a diversity of presentation approaches: "Shark Tank" style presentations, Panel Discussions, and more standard presentations -- but with a heavy dose of audience participation. Really felt different than much of what we all have come to expect from these types of conferences. 4. Tropicana Farewell - Watch the Video While you may have seen clips, trust me, as someone who was lucky enough to watch from his hotel room, the combined fireworks show, drone display and ultimate demolition of the old Tropicana was nothing short of spectacular! Recently, National Pork Board hosted its inaugural Home Base Week – three full days of almost our entire NPB staff team working together in our headquarters for face-to-face collaboration. The necessity of a week like this highlights the significant shift in the work environment for all companies over the past few years; there was a time not so long ago that an all-staff in-person meeting was more of an average Tuesday than a marquee event. But making the extra effort to bring everyone together was invaluable. My top three takeaways from the week: 1.     Spending time together in-person creates collaboration and builds relationships, two important aspects of our work at NPB. 2.     Learning has no limit. We can always listen, ask more questions and expand our knowledge of the industry. 3.     Stepping away from day-to-day work to connect as a full staff team prepares us to better serve America’s pig farmers.   These takeaways also renew my commitment to make the effort for direct, in-person connection with others, most importantly the farmers the Checkoff serves. Technology makes it easier than ever to make the phone call, join the zoom meeting, or send a text. But nothing replaces the discussion across the table. Just like Home Base Week, it requires more effort to make it happen. But, in the words of Theodore Roosevelt, “Nothing in the world is worth having or worth doing unless it means effort.”   In the coming weeks, the pork industry has a great opportunity to reconnect face-to-face at the 2024 World Pork Expo in Des Moines, IA.
