I remember the first time I used Revit to develop a project. I didn’t have a clue of what BIM was. My construction knowledge was pretty basic. As an architect, I started to ask myself, "What am I using Revit for?" I wasn’t even thinking about BIM as a methodology at all. But, at some point, I began to look for mentorship. I went ahead and started to look for BIM training. 3 years later I started using Revit as a design tool, I found a mentor. I was now about to understand what BIM was all about! No, I didn't nail it in the first attempts, but I didn't use Revit and BIM as an interchangeable concept anymore. And that was more than enough to start. Having had a BIM mentor made me pivot my architectural skills toward a construction-oriented approach. So whenever I question my BIM abilities, I hear in my head, “BIM is about construction understanding. Avoid building castles in the air.”
