🍺 Thursday already? More beer/leadership musings: Wherever possible I prefer to drink draft beer. On a trip one time in a country that more bottled beer I spied a draft tap. So I ordered one and settled into waiting for a mate. The beer was not good. When my mate arrived he saw my draft and ordered one before I could say anything. One sip and he screwed his face up in reaction. His verdict: ‘tastes like an old sock’. That got us talking: how? why? Who? That then got us wondering how would one market such a beer? We kicked around some ideas and came up with a slogan a campaign, even a jingle (‘when there’s nothing else: old sock beer’). It was a great laugh + distraction. Leaders are flawed. All of them/us. It’s the attitude to those flaws that matters. The follower’s choice is to focus on the flaws or pivot to the positive. Be supportive. Work with what’s there. That attitude creates opportunities, learning and possibilities for something different. It’s not the flaws or the skills that makes a leader, it’s the followers - the choices of the followers. Forget the elephant, have you dealt with the HiPPO in the room? As leaders we can struggle with brainstorming or solutions due to the HiPPO (Highest Paid Person’s Opinion) effect. I was recently in a beer judging competition and watched this take place in a short amount of time. A beer was opened and the two judges at the table started their process of reviewing the beer. As they got close to the end of the process, the lead judge at the table said something about the beer that they tasted. The second, less experienced judge said, “yeah, I see that too.” Next thing you know, after that beer was completed, the judge started sharing the beer more broadly, proclaiming that “off flavor” involved. While I did notice something off with the beer, I didn’t notice that flavor. I decided to keep my opinion to myself as it wasn’t a flavor I was familiar with. By the time the bottle was empty, a good percentage of people present “tasted” that off flavor. Whether it was there or not, almost everyone now tasted it. The same HiPPO effect takes place with your team. You’ve pulled the team together to think about a problem and a few good ideas start to come up. Maybe you even asked everyone to be prepared and come with some thoughts. Perhaps, you’ve even used a tool to make sure thoughts aren’t attributed to individuals, so every idea is equal. You talk about a couple, and then as a leader you say something positive about an idea or solution. Boom. Your team starts to see your idea, or the one you’re behind, and everyone starts to fall in line. If there are dissenters, they become quiet. The higher paid or greater your title, the more likely this is to happen. If you’re the HiPPO in the room, pay close attention to the dynamics. As the Leader, stay curious and be open.

Even McDonald's doesn't get it right some days. I received this cup today as I went through the drive thru and it made me laugh. Was this how Friday was going to go today. I chuckled thinking about the leadership conversations that must have taken place to still use the cups. Did the local restaurant call corporate? Did anyone talk to Branding? Is this an isolated issue or did all the cups shipped across the nation have this mistake? I can only assume they didn't have other cups or had they have gone through them already? So, then was the decision point to not serve drinks at all because there were no proper cups or still use the cups because they are still functioning and serve the purpose? Is the brand strong enough to manage through a mistake. What would the consumer choose? For the diet coke aficionados out there like me, you know that McDonalds has the best fountain diet coke hands down. I would take the diet coke in any cup. What would your company do? Would you criticize your local office if they chose to use the "mistake" cups? #mcdonalds

🍺 Thursday’s beer/leadership musings: Scott Ko post from last week reminded me of the Australian song ‘love to have a beer with Duncan’. And the reason why we love a beer with Duncan? (All together!) “Coz Duncan’s me mate” Except, with Duncan, I’m having ‘safe’ conversations. They don’t venture into new places and certainly don’t challenge my current thinking. They reinforce my existing frameworks + approaches, rather than provide an alternative perspective. Even the beer is known. It’s all a bit ho hum. But to have a beer with someone who thinks differently to me - that might expand my thinking, create different perspectives and opportunities. I’d get to try other beer too. It’d be stimulating. It's a risk, but not a very big one. its a stepping stone to…. ? In leadership, we refer to this as 'safe challenge' or 'stretch'. For our staff and also ourselves, our organisations and industries. "Conflicts are inevitable" Last week, I visited Copenhagen and had the opportunity to explore the Carlsberg home. In addition to learning about their famous beer 😃 , I discovered an intriguing chapter in its history. The founder of Carlsberg, J.C. Jacobsen, and his son, Carl Jacobsen, experienced a significant conflict that led to the creation of two separate breweries in 1882, turning them into competitors. Carl’s decision to start producing a beer with a shorter storage time was the reason for a conflict between the two men. I was thinking while coming back, when father and his single child can have the conflicts over business strategy then imagine boardroom. "Conflicts are inevitable" for professionals/thinkers. Its very much ok to have conflicts. However, the same is crucial for the evolution of any idea and ultimate value creation.
