Ready for business. Life teaches us much, but our heart knows how best to apply the lessons. Regardless of who we are, what we do or even where we live, we will have received many lessons in various forms and perspectives. Irrespective of our role and the work we will have to perform, ensuring we are ready for business is a personal responsibility if we are to give our all in the workplace. We might find yesterday’s endeavours laid solid foundations for our work today. If so, we are possibly ready for business. Alternatively, we should start the development process today for business tomorrow. In either case, preparing ourselves is a crucial part of living our potential, no?

Only thirty one percent of employees in the US report being motivated at work. In businesses that have a mission statement, that number jumps up to sixty three percent. How? Yesterday I released a YouTube short about micro-managing. A mission statement is a tool to stop micro managing and start managing. You can't be looking over your employees' shoulders every moment of every day to see exactly what they are doing. And if you could, that motivation would be crushed into the ground. When I work on a mission statement with a small business, I always recommend and workshop with the employees to discuss the mission, gather feedback, and debate what it means to everyone in the room. Being part of the process to create the business mission is highly motivating. It shows trust, respect, and a desire to learn as well as teach. How are you involving your employees in your mission and goals?

Starting a business can be incredibly exciting, but it's crucial to remember one key piece of advice: Don’t try to do everything at once! It can be incredibly tempting to juggle multiple projects, explore different markets, and build various teams simultaneously. However, this approach often leads to exhaustion, mistakes, and missed opportunities - all impacting confidence. Instead, focus on a few critical areas at a time—whether it’s perfecting your product, deeply understanding your target market, or establishing a strong team culture. By dedicating your energy and resources to what truly matters, you’ll set a solid foundation for long-term success. For those balancing a full-time job with a side hustle, be mindful of the challenges this dual role can create. It’s a tough balancing act that requires setting clear priorities, possibly delegating tasks, and knowing when the time is right to fully commit to your business. In my case it was the right time as there were mass redundancies in the energy sector, it also timed well with the knowledge I was getting from my MBA to take the plunge into company ownership. This however created an urgency to get revenue to the business to pay for essentials and ended up trying to hit too many targets at the same time, losing focus in many of the areas mentioned. But if there was one thing I did right, it was putting myself through as many courses as I could, not just including my MBA, to plug gaps in my knowledge - this led to a great network of people that I'm still in touch with today. It can be overwhelming at first, but surround yourself with good people and keep learning 😀
