This post has reminded me so much of these beautiful communities❤️. Thank you RNLI for this important partnership with EMEDO_EMEDOTZ that has significantly contributed to raising awareness on drowning and drowning risk factors. As the global small fisheries actors celebrate a Decade of #SSFGuidelines this year, one of the important area to torch in is the occupational drowning of small scale fishers. Every year, drowning claims the lives of 245,000 people globally. Over 2.5 million in the last Decade alone. It is an issue that affects every nation in the world and it’s impacts are unequal and disproportionate. More than half of all deaths are amongst children and young people, with more than 90% of all deaths occurring in low and middle income countries. Studies have have identified high drowning rates amongst fishers in Lake Victoria. These deaths are preventable and this calls for action to be taken. Through the collaboration that EMEDO has with RNLI (with 200 years experience in saving lives in water) we are proud to have implemented various interventions, at various levels and targeting various stakeholders in the Tanzania. Among them is the #LakeVictoriaDrowningPreventionProject #LVDPP that is addressing Drowning related issues in some fishing communities in Lake Victoria. Our fishers drowning prevention interventions contribute to the implementation policies, Strategies and regulatory frameworks including the #SmallScaleFisheriesGuidelines. Lights, camera, action - find out how we're using participatory video to understand our impact in Tanzania 👇 In July 2023, we joined InsightShare and our Tanzanian project partner, EMEDO_EMEDOTZ (EMEDO), in fishing communities on Lake Victoria to help locals share their stories about the impact of our drowning prevention work. Participatory video involves the community shaping and creating their own film(s). EMEDO were being trained to use video to capture how their understanding and approach to drowning risks had changed over the course of the project. EMEDO hosted story circles with community residents in the villages, helping residents record testimonies and interviews. Within them, they asked fishers to show and explain the items that are most important to their fishing activities. Storyboards were created to guide how the video footage should fit together to share the messages that were most important to residents. Girles Shaban, MEL Officer at EMEDO explained to us: 'People have ownership of the whole process. They feel like ‘this is mine’. This was clearly shown at the screenings, as people felt comfortable to challenge things that they did not agree with or felt did not fully represent their views.' At the RNLI, we're always seeking new ways to innovate to save every one. So you know what time is don’t you? But do you recognise it? It is easy to distinguish a human being from an object such as a signpost, a chair or a bicycle. But not every person you meet will be someone who you recognise or know. Likewise, most people would be able to identify the animal flying overhead and landing in a nearby tree as a bird. But only a handful could as confidently state the type or species. Similarly, a brief look at the etymology of the word ‘realise’ tells you that it means ‘to bring into existence’ or ‘to make or cause to become real’. So, where am I going with this? If realisation is causing something to become real and recognition is making it personal and specific… Do you realise and recognise that there is a version of that universal concept we call time which belongs to you? It is your property/possession/capital! Once you switch your thinking from time just being the vacant passing of minutes, hours and days and start to see it as a substantial, valuable, personal possession, it might just inspire a greater reluctance to waste so much of it… I hope so… #ItsAboutTime
