Coca-Cola has just quietly scrapped its 25% reusable packaging target, backpedaling on key sustainability commitments. But in El Paso, TX, over 100 restaurants are proving refillable glass bottles work. Coke’s Secret Refill Pilot, produced by The Story of Stuff Project and hosted by actor Yareli Arizmendi, uncovers this successful reuse model and raises the question: If reuse works in El Paso, why isn’t Coca-Cola scaling it globally? It’s time for the beverage industry to mainstream reuse and step away from plastic. Watch the full video on YouTube: https://lnkd.in/ebz82mVH #cocacola #plasticpollution #reuse #refill

What is striking in this conversation is the impact of #culture on the effectiveness of #reusable #packaging. South America seems to have delivered success in this area for The Coca-Cola Company while other geographies — and therefore cultures — have posed challenges. Also stunning is the sheer range of Coca-Cola-related litter globally. To be fair, consumers have to own a substantial portion of responsibility here. Is it difficult to retain an empty bottle and simply carry it back to an urban area where recycling or other infrastructure can be found? [Answer: no.] Clearly however, the buck stops with the brand. Another particularly burning questions is this: if the fundamental issue is with #plastic #waste, are there alternatives to using plastic to package #beverages? [Answer: yes.] https://lnkd.in/gtqaw_GS

A recent global Brand Audit Report by The Break Free From Plastic (BFFP) movement revealed a startling fact: worldwide 18 of the 20 most common items found in waste streams were related to food packaging, including beverage bottles, food wrappers, and food containers. This underscores the critical need to shift towards reusable service ware and packaging to combat plastic pollution and embrace a circular economy. Amid the packaging crisis, opting for reusable service ware is a must. Nonetheless, we have a solution for Colorado-based businesses. We're still accepting participants to receive the $600 worth of service ware and one-on-one consulting with us. Contact us for more information. As we argue about crumpets, milk and car company rebrands - isn't this the thing we should care about? Coca-Cola has been accused of quietly abandoning a pledge to achieve a 25% reusable packaging target by 2030 in what campaigners call a “masterclass in greenwashing”. The company has been previously found by researchers to be among the world’s most polluting brands when it comes to plastic waste. In 2022, the company made a promise to have 25% of its drinks sold in refillable or returnable glass or plastic bottles, or in refillable containers that could be filled up at fountains or “Coca-Cola freestyle dispensers”. Why has this happened? What can or should we as an industry do about it?

The discussion surrounding take-out food packaging has been relatively quiet recently, following a necessary pause after the prohibition of single-use plastics in October 2023. This ban specifically targeted the use of throwaway plastic cutlery and styrofoam containers, leading the industry to shift its focus towards finding alternative choices for their clientele. Looking back on the past year, the primary focus has been on developing environmentally friendly approaches for packaging take-out meals, ones that have a minimal ecological footprint and promote a sustainable economy. This particular aspect has garnered significant attention in the packaging sector lately, often spurred by regulatory measures and policies designed to foster innovation in this field. #plastic #saynotoplastic #plasticpackaging

Why not incentivize businesses utilizing sustainable products like Bevi? 🤔 "You may qualify for a credit up to $7,500 under Internal Revenue Code Section 30D if you buy a new, qualified plug-in EV or fuel cell electric vehicle (FCV)." "IF." Imagine the impact if REAL LIFE SUSTAINABILITY OFFERINGS received the same support as electric vehicles through tax credits. In a region I managed, 62 Bevi stations saved an average of 11,168 bottles PER WEEK with the top 10 accounts saving over 7,300 bottles weekly! These businesses deserve recognition for their commitment to sustainability. Sean Grundy who do we need to talk to in DC?? #Sustainability #Bevi #TaxCredits #EnvironmentalImpact 🌿🌍
#Sustainability News ➡ A new bill is being sponsored in New York State to increase the recycling refund rate and expand the list of redeemable containers to include wine bottles, juice boxes, and tea beverages. ⏳ It's overdue! Why has it taken so long to incentivize recycling more commonly consumed bottles? 💬 Bill sponsor Deborah Glick said, “When I was growing up in Queens, we had milk delivered in reusable bottles. We knew how to do this—we've just had a revolution of laziness." 🌎 While it feels like the distant past that everyone was using only #reusable containers, hopefully in the not-too-distant future we’ll all find them second nature again.
