This video perfectly captures the blessings and curses of social media.
I stumbled upon this KFC proposal video on Instagram that went viral for all the wrong reasons.
The comments left me horrified.
But just a few days later, as brands poured in their love and support for the couple, it transformed back into one of the most beautiful moments on the internet.
That’s the power of social media!
One day, it can tear you down, making you question your worth.
The next day, it can bring the world to your feet, reminding you of your place in it.
One day, your post gets just two likes and barely any impressions.
The next day, when you least expect it, a post suddenly blows up and brings you joy.
Social media has a unique way of humbling us one moment and elevating us the next.
So, what’s the moral of the story?
Don’t hold back from sharing your voice online.
For every ten critics, there will be a hundred supporters waiting to cheer you on.
All that matters is good intentions and maximum effort.
Apply this mindset to marketing your business!
Keep posting - you never know which moment will resonate✨

Thank you to Barbara Gottesman, MPH for bringing this to my attention (and making my blood pressure spike!) https://lnkd.in/gVfu3ehE
I have so many thoughts, but I'll keep it brief: Zyn's rise in popularity is largely attributable to social media. In theory, FDA prohibits influencer promotion of some tobacco products and the FTC requires disclosure of material relationships between influencers and brands. HA! That a joke bc a) disclosure rarely happens and b) the policy is unenforceable. As the article points out, few influencers are explicitly paid by brands. Rather, when they post about some emerging trend/product, like Zyn, “The payment you’re getting is people Googling Zyn and your video coming up on TikTok or YouTube.”
The effects of social media promotion of commercial determinants of health (from tobacco to pharma to firearms) are understudied, yet super important. While we are all focusing on how social media is detrimental to our mental health, we are ignoring another elephant in the network: the ways that the FTC and FDA protected consumers from advertisements about harmful products do not translate to how these harmful products are promoted on social media. Full stop. It's a new world and new approaches are required.

Do you know how hard it is for a Southerner to make a thirty-second video short? We talk slow. And forget about TikTok. They've only got a ten second attention span.
It's great for those young girls that jump rope and dance a hundred times in 10 seconds.
But in the South our exercising consists mostly of pushing a grocery buggy through the aisles of Walmart.
But when we have something to say, and it's serious. Listen up. Because it might just be profound.
People love to buy. But they hate to be sold.
So stop it with all that manipulation, that fast talking with more high pressure scare tactics than a Bible thumping preacher standing on your chest.
Be like a tour guide in a dark cavern shining a light on the slippery path.
So they can make up their minds if it does what you say it does. And if it's right for them right now or not.
That's it.
Have you let go of using manipulation on a sales call? Share your thoughts in the comments.

Smile - you’re on TV.
“Gagraphobia", a fear of making the audience smile, (credit to Andy Nairn for the excellent wordsmithery) had ad land in its grip for a while.
So few ads were using humour, for so many reasons, both perceived and real, yet making someone laugh is a great way to get people to remember and like you and your product. It’s good to see that the tide seems to be turning.
Our SPAM campaign seemed like a good opportunity to sprinkle some fun around. And SPAM Appreciation Week this week gives us a great excuse to talk about it again.
To attract a new younger audience, we needed to build an emotional connection with SPAM and give lapsed and new audiences a warm and fuzzy feeling about the brand.
So given our audience of no-nonsense Northerners, who are famed for their dry wit, we introduced our hero, Nigel, who likes cooking but takes all the fancy, celebrity chef recipes with a large pinch of salt.
Nigel explains the wide variety of dishes you can create with Spam using wry, gently self-mocking humour. He worries if he has enough trays for the dinner party he’s cooking for and boasts of his Nan’s “traditional” Spam based Ramen dish.
Good fun, very memorable and a significant uplift in sales with the younger contingent to boot.
