When it comes to plastic and sustainability what are we solving for? While plastics have been proven through life cycle assessments to be the lowest carbon footprint material in the majority of cases, the issue of single use plastic and waste remains. However, an “improvement” in one area that leads to a negative environmental consequence in another, is not truly sustainable. It's Circular Economy Month in Canada but for PPEC members and the Canadian paper packaging industry, it is always #CircularEconomyMonth. By prioritizing the use of recycled ♻️ content, PPEC members embed a circular 🔄 approach to using and reusing recycled paper in every aspect of their business operations -- from using recycled content as their feedstock, to minimizing waste in their operations, and to ultimately making paper packaging products that can be recycled at home and in businesses across Canada. From production to recovery, the paper packaging industry is committed to environmental sustainability year-round, and it's been that way for decades. Yesterday our colleague Haley Lowry, Global Sustainability Director for Dow Packaging & Specialty Plastics, came to Brussels to discuss with policy makers and stakeholders key policy enablers for our circular business strategy -aligned to our global goal to commercialize 3 million metric tones by 2030 of offerings from plastic wastes, bio and other wastes- and key role #PPWR in discussion will play for it. Thanks to all the representatives from #packaging value chain for joining us in our offices to pass your views on still open challenges and how this policy will drive packaging circularity, reconfirming once more #collaboration is a key lever for a new circular plastics packaging economy. What is the current state of DRS (Deposit Return Scheme) implementation in Europe? ♻️ Some countries are progressing quickly, while others are moving very slowly in their efforts to meet the recycling goals set by the EU directive on Single-Use Plastics (SUP), which establishes minimum collection requirements for PET drink containers of 77% by 2025 and 90% by 2029. Isn't it great to be part of a company that has such a huge impact on our environment and the circular economy? And we're dreaming big—Europe is just the beginning! 🌐🇺🇸Positive news coming from the United States! The White House announced that single-use plastics will be phased out from all federal operations by 2035 as part of a broader strategy to combat plastic pollution. Well done! As a first step, single-use plastics like cups and straws will no longer be purchased for catering, events and packaging managed by the federal government by 2027. Public procurement is a powerful tool to spur the circular economy transition. For example, the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) recently adopted in the EU introduced mandatory Green Public Procurement criteria for EU public institutions. And for good reason: public authorities in the EU spend around €1.8 trillion on purchasing works, goods and services! Imagine this amount of money going into circular, not linear, products and services. This could massively improve demand for circular products, support innovative start-ups, and streamline investment into the circular economy. Green public procurement can also be employed by local authorities. Find out how cities can support circular innovations in our recent blog post (link in comment👇).
