The Wichita Police Department's Autism Outreach Program with Heartspring allows officers to better serve those in our community who live with autism. This partnership would not be possible without additional support from the Sedgwick County Government + Emergency Services, Wichita Police and Fire Foundation (WPFF), and Scheels. Along with training to help officers respond to calls where someone might be in distress and can't communicate, we also helped equip patrol vehicles with the sensory kits featured in the video. As seen in the video, these kits help de-escalate situations, provide some sensory relief, and alleviate communication barriers. In the Wichita community, you can register a child or loved one with autism with the WPD to prepare first responders to improve their response. The form, found at https://bit.ly/3W9RYqk, includes information like an individual's preferred method of communication, behaviors that may attract the attention of first responders, and relevant medical conditions officers should be aware of when responding to a call. Additionally, you'll receive a window sticker to place on your front door or vehicle which would alert any officer that someone on-site has autism and they should proceed accordingly. These resources help make our community safer for everyone and improve interactions between emergency responders and the neurodiverse population.
