Introducing this week’s #HotelierOfTheWeek! 🥂 Andy Barnsdale is the General Manager at The Principal York (currently being rebranded to The Milner York) and started his career behind the bar in a hotel on the Isle of Wight for a summer season, with the intention of learning as much as he could so he could fulfil his goal to one day run a pub. Instead, Andy found himself on a management track moving across different roles within hospitality, ultimately progressing to become a General Manager across multiple resorts for Bourne Leisure Ltd. “From that point on I knew exactly where I wanted my career to go, I had my sights set on management in hotels,” Andy said. Andy moved on to become General Manager at multiple venues, which provided him valuable experience to run large scale period properties and successfully grow their business and people. For Andy, every day as a hotelier is a unique adventure. In his role, he thrives on the unpredictability of each day, finding joy in the diverse challenges and rewards that come his way. Andy revealed that the most fulfilling aspect of his role is witnessing the hard work of his dedicated teams come to fruition, resulting in exceptional hospitality experiences for guests. Andy takes immense pride in mentoring his team members, helping them grow and supporting them in achieving their goals. Currently, Andy is excited about the ongoing rebranding of The Principal York. He has played a pivotal role in promoting top employees to key positions to ensure a smooth transition in the hotel's identity and culture. Walking into the hotel each morning, he said “I feel a deep sense of pride and accomplishment.” Andy emphasised the importance of thorough research and first-hand experience for anyone entering the hotel industry. He advises prospective candidates to visit the property they are interested in, engage with the staff, and experience the hotel as a guest. This simple yet profound step can make a significant impression during the interview process. The hotel industry offers a multitude of opportunities for career growth and seizing these opportunities with a willingness to get involved is key to building a successful career in hospitality. Throughout his career, Andy has had the privilege of working with outstanding people and properties, achieving commercial success, and winning multiple awards. Among his accolades are receiving two rosettes and an AA 4-star rating for his hotels. However, Andy considers the ongoing rebranding of The Principal York to be a defining moment in his career. Being part of the historic and iconic York hotel’s transformation offers a sense of great pride and honour for Andy, as he looks forward to solidifying the upcoming Milner York’s reputation as the city's best-loved hotel. Andy’s dedication to his role and his team, along with his passion for creating exceptional hospitality experiences, truly make him our worthy Hotelier of the Week.

As hospitality performers, it's not about what you say but what you do. Meet Maria Vanessa Romano, a shining example of our core value, leading by example with a smile on her face and the heart of servant, each and every day. "I get my hands dirty with my team, I believe in doing the same work as my line staff, no one is above anything. It sets the tone on my team that we are all in this together and that we all play important role together, it's not about me and a singular role I play" Vanessa says. The Art of Hospitality Working in the hospitality industry, whether in busy restaurants or luxurious hotels, is a balancing act between exhaustion and excitement. It requires long hours, boundless energy, and a continuous dedication to meeting the needs of others. The pressure to provide exceptional service, often within tight timeframes and with numerous tasks to juggle, can be overwhelming. However, amidst the demanding nature of the job, there is a sense of fulfillment. Creating moments of joy, seeing guests' faces light up with satisfaction as you surpass their expectations, is truly rewarding. The bonds formed with coworkers, the dynamic nature of guest interactions, and the gratification of contributing to memorable experiences all make for a fulfilling and unique career. While it presents challenges, the joy of working in hospitality serves as a powerful motivator in overcoming the inevitable hardships. My take on hospitality over the past years — Working in hospitality is a tough job, but it is also an absolute pleasure. It is a career path that offers challenges, rewards, and the potential for personal and professional growth. By embracing the human connection, honing service skills, and seizing opportunities, hospitality professionals make a difference in the lives of others while simultaneously enriching their own. Hospitality is not unique in the challenges it is facing but they are challenges nonetheless.
‘From its heavenly chateaubriand to its venerable staff, this Dorset hotel delivers’, says Fiona Duncan Kind words from the esteemed hotel and travel writer Fiona Duncan in the @telegraph a few weeks ago. This recognition of the team, their dedication, hard work and attention to detail is everything they deserve. We are so proud of what we have achieved so far and despite all the challenges hospitality faces from staffing to rising costs to the cost of living crisis, we intend to keep going.

I moved continents 4 times in the first 20 years of my life. And whilst being the ‘new kid’ every few years wasn’t easy. In hindsight, it gave me a masterclass in the hospitality industry. I learnt: - How to speak to all types of people - How to adapt to & respect different cultures - How to create a sense of home wherever I go But also, everywhere we went… I became more aware of the impact that hospitality can have. We’re often the first impression new visitors have of a country. And that’s a huge responsibility. One I don’t underestimate. At Rainier Hotels & Hospitality, we don’t “just” manage hotels. We curate experiences. We celebrate global perspectives. We create a welcoming environment for all. My diverse upbringing reminds me that at its core… Hospitality is about making people feel at home. No matter where they come from. How has your background influenced your professional perspective? #Hospitality #Hoteliers #HotelManagement
