A year ago, I took a big leap and switched careers, leaving my old job of 10 years to explore the tech world. It was scary starting over, but I was motivated and passionate to learn all about tech, SaaS platforms, AI, and digital transformation. While I was busy discovering the technical side of things with the developers, I also made sure to strengthen my marketing and writing skills. I wrote lots of articles on different topics, from travel and social issues to digital transformation. I picked up tips and inspirations from marketing videos on social media channels, always trying to think of new ideas to make me stand out. Being a woman in the professional world has taught me that the only boundaries that truly hold us back are the ones we create for ourselves. Trusting in our skills and keeping our curiosity alive are the secrets to overcoming any obstacles in our path. While I'm just beginning my journey, and circumstances like the Lebanese financial crisis hindered my career growth earlier, believing in myself and having mentors and leaders who saw the potential in me has made the ride much smoother. So, on this Women's Day, let's cheer on breaking barriers, leaving toxic environments behind, finding leaders who challenge and push us forward, lifting each other, and reaching new heights together. As we mark IWD 2024, it's essential to reflect not only on progress but also on the challenges that persist. Like many of us, I can't help but feel a tinge of disappointment at the slow pace of change and the hurdles still faced. Worse, I can’t help but feel a tinge of disappointment in women themselves. Wait, what? Okay, there I said it. Whew. Let me be clear where I’m coming from. I am a huge champion for women. For those who know me, it would be fair to say that nearly my entire professional ethos is around supporting and celebrating women at every turn. I mentor, coach, volunteer and advocate because helping other women and paying it forward truly fills my cup. But this year, I feel disheartened and demoralized - negatively impacted by what I’ve seen and heard (and frankly, not seen and heard) and in some cases, what I’ve experienced personally. Here’s the thing. I’m humbled and grateful to work and collaborate with a diverse pool of amazing women, all doing innovative, noteworthy and significant things. Yet, despite their successes, the in-between difficult and challenging realities of their journeys are all too similar - at turn after turn, they’re being treated poorly by 𝚖̶𝚎̶𝚗̶, other women. Even with bold acronyms like DEI, a slew of dedicated hashtags and an increase of groups and organizations dedicated to supporting women’s careers and entrepreneurial pursuits, the frequency of women being sabotaged, bullied, disrespected, taken advantage of and generally unsupported by (still) too many of the women around them, has not decreased. We rightfully complain about “performative action” even though the initiatives mentioned above may be, in some cases, examples of that themselves. (#iwd included) We’re supposedly driving towards “inclusion” except, of course, for the women whom these initiatives, and their vocal drivers, deem unworthy of including. Bias abounds in the most insidious of ways. But, I digress. So, in addition to the myriad of issues we have to address – pay equity gaps, unpaid emotional and physical labour, lack of funding for entrepreneurs – there is the stark reality that we, as women, are not calling our plays from the same playbook. Point being, of all the challenges we need to address, challenges within our own gender should not and cannot be ignored. A recent report stated that “9 out of 10 people hold ‘fundamental biases’ against women.” As it appears, a too large portion of those 9 may be women themselves. With all of this said, please forgive me as I sit this one out. It's not quite living up to what I had hoped for… #iwd2024 #womensupportingwomen #beagoodhuman
