Among all the qualities that define great leadership, the most valuable one is the ability to develop and multiply more people into leadership positions. John C. Maxwell once underlined that multiplying leaders is "the single greatest investment you can make because it produces the single greatest return." Leadership is more than just holding a position. It's about creating a wave of influence that spreads by empowering and expanding the circle of emerging leaders in your organization. The true measure of your success as a leader isn't just in what you achieve personally, but in the legacy you leave behind and the foundation you lay for an organization that thrives even when you're not there. Here are the five steps I've honed during my leadership career to cultivate new leaders: 👉Mindset shift: Start with yourself. Embrace the mindset of a multiplier by acknowledging that your role is to elevate others into leadership. Adopt what I call the 70% rule: if someone can perform a task at least 70% as well as you could, allow them the opportunity to handle it and excel in the remaining 30%. 👉Cultivate invitation: The art of multiplication involves actively seeking out potential leaders who are ready and eager for growth. Spot the doers, the go-getters, the ones with spark, then extend an invitation for them to join you in the leadership narrative you're crafting. 👉Initiate activation: Ignite the torch of shared responsibilities. Bring your developing leaders into the fold with collaborative projects where they can make decisions and experience the repercussions and consequences, all within the safety net of your guidance and feedback. 👉Handing off: Letting go is part of growth. After ample mentoring, step back and vest your new leaders with the authority to lead. The act of handing over the reins is a profound and gradual transition, marking the next stage of the individual's and organization's evolution. 👉Drive replication: A true multiplier does not stop at creating one leader; they inspire their leaders to become multipliers themselves. Cultivating a chain reaction of leadership ensures the ongoing vitality of the organizational culture and mission. Through multiplication, organizations don't just grow; they evolve with a leadership pipeline that ensures stability and longevity.
