HAPPY KWANZAA Kwanzaa was created to introduce and reinforce seven basic values of African culture which contribute to building and reinforcing family, community and culture among African American people as well as Africans throughout the world African community. These values are called the Nguzo Saba which in Swahili means the Seven Principles. Developed by Dr. Karenga, the Nguzo Saba stand at the heart of the origin and meaning of Kwanzaa, for it is these values which are not only the building blocks for community but also serve to reinforce and enhance them. Kwanzaa begins on Dec. 26, and ends on Jan. 1. The Foundation of the Holiday is built upon the following seven principles: 1. Umoja (Unity) (00-MOE-Jah) – To strive for and maintain unity in the family, community, nation and race. 2. Kujichagalia (Self-Determination) -To define ourselves, name ourselves, create for ourselves and speak for ourselves. 3. Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility) – To build and maintain our community together and to make our brothers and sisters problems our problem s and to solve them together. 4. Ujammaa (Cooperative Economics) – To build and maintain our own stores, shops and other business and to profit together from them. 5. Nia (Purpose) – To make as our collective vocation the building and developing our community in order to restore our people to their traditional greatness. 6. Kuumba (creativity)- To do always as much as we can in the way that we can , in order to leave our community more beautiful and beneficial then when we inherited it. 7. Imani ( Faith)- To believe with all our hearts in our parents, our teachers, our leaders, people and the righteousness and victory of our struggle. #Kwanzaa2024

🕯️ Celebrating Kwanzaa: A Season of Community and Culture 🌟 Kwanzaa is a week-long celebration honoring African American heritage, culture, and shared values. Observed from December 26 to January 1, this holiday was created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga as a way to reaffirm African American identity and unity during the civil rights movement. Its name comes from the Swahili phrase “matunda ya kwanza,” meaning “first fruits,” symbolizing harvest celebrations rooted in African traditions. ✨ At the heart of Kwanzaa are the Seven Principles (Nguzo Saba), which inspire reflection, connection, and collective progress: 🖤 Umoja (Unity): Striving for and maintaining unity in family, community, and race. 💡 Kujichagulia (Self-Determination): Defining, naming, creating, and speaking for ourselves. 🤝 Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility): Building and maintaining our community together. 💵 Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics): Supporting and building businesses that uplift the community. 🌱 Nia (Purpose): Committing to restoring greatness to our community. 🎨 Kuumba (Creativity): Leaving our community better and more beautiful for future generations. 🙏 Imani (Faith): Believing in ourselves, our people, and the righteousness of our journey. As we strive to promote cultural competency, we honor the African American legacy of resilience and community building that Kwanzaa represents. ✨ How do you reflect on the values of Kwanzaa during this season? 🫶🏾 We honour the legacy of the Kupai Omasker Working Party. It is a beacon of hope and inspiration. Their story is a poignant reminder of the impact that dedicated advocacy and cross- cultural collaboration can have on society. By bringing together the voices of Torres Strait Islanders and the support of philanthropists, they have paved the way for a more inclusive and just society. ℹ️ Read more about the working party in Paul Ban’s book entitled Piri Piri Mab: The Journey to Legal Recognition of the Torres Strait Islander Child Rearing Practice “Those outside Ailan Kastom, and are not Torres Strait Islanders, have found it difficult to understand a practice based on collectivist and communal ways of living rather than western individualism”- Piri Piri Mab, Introduction

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) was commemorated through an impactful event organized by Community Empowerment for Local Development (CELD), Tarkanfi, SWDA, and Adoye focusing in Oromia region. These women-led Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) brought together diverse stakeholders to raise awareness about GBV and advocate for systemic change. Activities included dialogue, public campaign, and crafting action points that all aimed at amplifying the voices of women and girls while challenging harmful practices and conflict induced GBVs. The collaborative effort not only highlighted the prevalence of GBV in the region but also emphasized the critical role of collective action in creating a safer, more equitable society for all. #16DaysofActivisim #StopGBV #ProtectWomen&Girls #ConflictResolution #Peacebuilding https://lnkd.in/erFQXSz9

The Power of Kwanzaa Principles and Emotionally Mature Elders in Shaping Boys of Color As we approach Kwanzaa, let us reflect on how its principles—Unity, Self-Determination, Collective Work and Responsibility, Cooperative Economics, Purpose, Creativity, and Faith—can deeply impact the lives of boys of color. These values teach resilience, pride, and a sense of belonging, fostering the foundation for self-worth and greatness. But principles alone aren’t enough. Boys of color thrive when emotionally mature elders step into their lives—not just occasionally, but consistently. Transparent, affirming, and present elders create spaces where these young men feel valued and seen. They model emotional intelligence, accountability, and integrity while nurturing the unique genius within every boy. When the wisdom of Kwanzaa combines with the guidance of committed mentors, the result is powerful: young leaders who are confident in their identity and inspired to uplift their communities. This Kwanzaa, let’s not just celebrate—let’s show up. Let’s affirm. Let’s lead with love and intention. #Kwanzaa #BoysOfColor #Mentorship #CommunityLeadership #Affirmation #EmotionalMaturity #UniqueGenius
