Are you frustrated with flat or declining revenue? Are you worried that your sales people have become complacent or are calling on the same relationships they’ve had for decades without much success bringing new logo accounts into the business? Are they having a lot of coffee meetings and a lot of golf outings showing up on the expense reports that aren’t turning into new opportunities for business? The problem likely lies in one of three areas: Behavior: Are they doing enough behaviors? Are they doing the right behaviors? Are they doing enough of the right behaviors? Attitude: Is fear holding them back? When people have a mindset of fear of rejection, fear that they are bothering people or they are emotionally attached to their own negative mindset, such as “I don’t like cold calls myself, so I’m not going to make cold calls,” it can sabotage prospecting effectiveness. Sometimes that mindset manifests in a different way: people feel like they need to develop a relationship first before they can ask for business. Relationships are certainly important, but the challenge is that most people who get caught in that trap spend so much time developing the relationship, it extends the sales cycle and then they develop a conflict of interest where they don’t know how to take this person who has now become a friend and turn it back into a business conversation. Technique: The last area is technique. If you are doing enough of the right behaviors, and you have the right mindset, there has to be something in the technique that can be tweaked or changed to have more effective results.
